Though Kaylee's diary revealed her deep reliance on Isabelle, Helen, observing from the outside, quickly noticed a significant problem.
Manuscripts served as vital proof of original authorship and should always remain in the author's possession. However, Kaylee had handed over all her manuscripts to Isabelle.
As a result, if Kaylee's work were to achieve success, she would have no means to prove her authorship or reclaim her rightful recognition and assets.
It was clear that this so-called best friend wasn't as trustworthy as she seemed.
Helen forced a strained smile. "If you haven't done anything wrong, there's nothing to feel uneasy about."
Isabelle was momentarily taken aback by Helen's comment. Kaylee had always been mild-mannered; why was she being so confrontational today?
It seemed the rumors circulating outside were true—Kaylee had undergone a significant change since her return.
"You make a good point," Isabelle said, quickly redirecting the conversation. "But let's not dwell on that. It's almost lunchtime, and it's been ages since we visited our favorite restaurant. I'm feeling nostalgic—how about we go and relive some memories?"
"Sure," Helen replied, intrigued by what Isabelle was really planning.
They soon reached a restaurant and ordered a variety of dishes.
As the food arrived, Isabelle eagerly served Helen. "Here are your favorite chicken tenders! Give them a try and see if they still taste the same."
Helen had developed a strong aversion to meat during her pregnancy. She glanced at the chicken tenders on her plate but didn't pick up her fork.
With a bright smile, she said, "It's the same restaurant, so the taste shouldn't be too different. What's changed are the diners and the hearts of the people."
"I've made my decision; I need to go public," Helen replied resolutely. "After spending six months abroad, I've realized that his opinion doesn't matter to me anymore. I just want to live life on my own terms."
"Alright then…" Isabelle nodded, indicating her understanding. "I respect your choice, but this situation is complicated, and it might not be the right time to go public. Just give me a little time to sort things out, and I'll keep you updated as soon as I can, okay?"
"No problem," Helen said, her gaze fixed on Isabelle. "I have plenty of time right now, so I'd really appreciate it if you could put in a bit more effort."
"Of course! What are you talking about? We're best friends—your business is my business. I'll make it my top priority," Isabelle replied earnestly, her expression sweet and innocent.
The two women sat together, presenting a picture of serenity and beauty. Yet only they understood the intricate plans and calculations swirling in their minds.
In just a few exchanged words, Isabelle recognized that "Kaylee" was no longer the naive person she once knew. To maintain her current reputation and status, she would need to devise a new strategy to keep "Kaylee" in check.
