While the brief exchange of glances lasted less than a second, Diana felt her heart quiver under the intensity of Helen's gaze.
This Kaylee seemed… different somehow.
Nonetheless, they were in the Terzian residence, and with Kaylee's father absent, there was no reason for Diana to feel afraid.
Steadying herself, she adopted an aloof demeanor and started to scold Helen. "So you think you don't owe us any explanation? If that's the case, why are you back in this house?
"How could you ignore our calls and messages? Do you even realize how worried your father is? After all these years of raising you, is this how you repay us?"
"Whatever," Helen replied nonchalantly, playing with her fingers. "My phone broke when I fell into the sea, so I got a new SIM card."
"So are you saying your new SIM card doesn't let you make calls? Is that really your excuse for all the worry you've caused?" Diana challenged, her tone aggressive.
"I guess?" Helen raised an eyebrow, regarding her with an impassive expression.
Seeing that "Kaylee" was alive, Katie felt a surge of confidence. Standing tall, she joined Diana and exclaimed, "What kind of attitude is that?"
Helen shot her a sharp look, and Katie immediately wavered. She moved closer to Diana, carefully avoiding Helen's gaze.
"You're both so irritating!" Helen retorted, waving her hand as she stood up and headed upstairs.
Halfway up, she paused and shouted into the kitchen, "Make some chicken noodle soup tonight! I want it ready for breakfast, so don't forget!"
"Kaylee! I'm not done talking! Get back here!" Diana shouted.
"Kaylee!" Katie echoed.
Helen acted as if she hadn't heard them, gliding away with an air of indifference despite their simmering anger. Before long, she disappeared at the top of the stairs.
Just then, Diana's haughty voice sliced through the tension. "I told her not to make it. What's the matter? Are you planning to kick me out too?"
Helen's face remained impassive as she glanced at Diana, her cold eyes briefly sweeping over her before turning away.
She casually picked up a slice of bread, her tone dismissive. "And what if I did? Every brick and tile in this house is backed by my grandfather's resources. Kicking you out would be as easy as making a phone call."
After finishing her bite, Helen grabbed her bag and headed for the door.
As she passed Diana, she paused to meet her gaze, delivering a stern warning. "I've seen through your tricks since childhood. I'm no longer that little girl nor the Kaylee of the past. If you and your daughter want to stay in this house, you'd better behave."
Helen had more important matters to address now. As long as Diana and Katie stayed out of her way, she was willing to let them enjoy a few more comfortable days.
But if they decided to cause trouble, she wouldn't hesitate to deal with them swiftly.
