Half an hour later, Tyrone arrived at Mia's home.
After ringing the doorbell twice with no answer, he decided to take matters into his own hands and pushed the door open.
Knocking on the door, he asked. "Mia, are you home?"
When no answer came, he knocked harder. "Mia!"
Silence echoed back.
Frustrated, Tyrone pulled out his phone and called Mia again. When the call connected, he heard her ringtone coming from inside the house.
Realizing she must be there, he quickly pocketed his phone and charged at the door. He slammed into it once, then twice, feeling the frame yield slightly.
Taking a step back for more momentum, he launched himself against the door again. This time, it finally gave way, and the door swung open.
Tyrone stumbled forward from the force. As he regained his balance, he spotted Mia lying on the floor. He rushed over and gently lifted her, calling out, "Mia? Mia!"
Her eyes were tightly shut, and she didn't respond. Panic surged through Tyrone as he scooped her into his arms and dashed out the door.
Unfortunately, the elevator was taking too long—stuck on the 22nd floor. After waiting for half a minute, urgency took over, and he sprinted into the stairwell. He charged down from the 18th floor, not pausing at all.
As he reached the ground floor, he heard a faint voice from his arms. "Mr. Tyrone?"
Panting heavily, Tyrone slowed down and lowered his head, locking eyes with Mia's dazed, fragile expression. In that brief moment of connection, he felt himself freeze, unable to move.
Mia blinked up at him and said, "I'm really hungry. Did you come to bring me a cake?"
"Let's go," she said, brushing off her clothes as she stepped forward.
But before she could take another step, Tyrone grabbed her by the collar and pulled her back. "Hey, hey, hey—"
Mia stumbled, barely managing to regain her balance. "Aren't we going to get food?"
"Not like this! You look so disheveled that even ghosts would steer clear! If someone takes a picture and posts it online, how will Helen ever show her face again?" Tyrone joked, pretending to shudder.
Mia brushed her fingers through her hair, picturing her reflection. Her enthusiasm for rushing out vanished in an instant.
Still, she was craving that cheesesteak. If they missed breakfast, the shop wouldn't serve it again until tomorrow.
