Scott was taken aback. "Mia, what's wrong? Are you okay?"
"Don't look at me like that," Mia replied, feeling dizzy from a sleepless night. She rubbed her temples and turned away. "I find you repulsive."
Scott sniffed his jacket, which reeked of smoke and alcohol. "You're right, I smell pretty bad. I'll jump in the shower, and then we can unwind together, okay?"
"There's no need for that," Mia interjected sharply. "Some things can't be washed away. Just tell me—how long has this been going on?"
"What do you mean, 'how long'?" Scott replied, feigning innocence. "Mia, please don't act this way. It makes me feel really uneasy, too."
The more Mia listened, the more nauseous she felt. "Enough. Let's break up. I've packed your things; they're by the door. Take them and leave my house. Let's part on good terms for old times' sake."
"What? Are you really considering breaking up? I can't accept that," Scott said, frustration tightening his features as he played the victim.
"I know I'm not working right now, and maybe going out drinking wasn't the best choice. I thought if I let off some steam, it would spare you from my emotions, but I guess it just looks like I'm wasting time.
"Regardless, I love you, and I'm not ready to give up on us. Once I get back on my feet, you'll see I'm not as hopeless as you think."
Mia had heard variations of this speech countless times before. Each time in the past, she had been moved to tears, envisioning a bright future for them. But now, his words felt like daggers—sharp and painfully hollow.
Her pale face twisted into a cold sneer as she turned away, regarding him with disdain. "So, is it my fault for putting pressure on you? Did I force you to run off with some rich woman? Was it me who made you kiss her? Did I hold a gun to your head to sleep with her?"
Scott felt as if he'd been struck by lightning. "How… How did you know?"
Before Mia could respond, Scott made a wild guess. "It was Tyrone, wasn't it? Mia, how can you trust what he says? You know he's tried to sabotage me. That guy has his own agenda; you can't believe him—"
As soon as he was gone, Mia collapsed.
…
Before boarding the plane, Helen decided to call Mia one last time, but the call went unanswered.
"Let's go; it's time to board," Chandler urged.
"Just a moment," Helen replied, feeling uneasy.
She quickly texted Tyrone, "Mia knows about the situation with Scott. I can't reach her, and I'm worried something might have happened. Can you check on her for me?"
