Jessica was completely unaware of all that had transpired after her departure.
Stepping out of the clinic, she finally felt a slight stir of appetite and wandered into a modestly clean diner, ordering something she’d once loved.
But the first bite made her retch. “Way too salty,” she managed to say.
“Sorry. I’m so sorry. I’ll whip up a fresh one immediately,” the diner owner hurried over to apologize.
Jessica nodded weakly, still queasy
from vomiting.
The owner took the plate back and tasted the food, muttering, “Not salty at all.”
But figuring it might be a matter of personal preference and not wanting to escalate things, he prepared a new plate, deliberately using less salt.
Yet Jessica still wasn’t satisfied. The new plate tasted completely flat to her, impossible to stomach.
The owner’s expression soured.
“Never mind. I’m done,” Jessica said blankly, dropping her fork, rising to her feet, and settling the bill.
The owner visibly relaxed, which only fueled her irritation.
She thought, ‘What’s that about? Makes me look like some fussy customer, when he’s the one who can’t cook properly.’
Seething, Jessica arrived at the office and found several unclear sections in the work report submitted by a subordinate. Her anger reignited.
She snapped, “How do you manage tasks? How many times have I stressed that reports must be clear and structured? Do you expect me to fix this wishy- washy nonsense? All of you are incompetent!”
The subordinate on the phone was left dumbfounded.
He thought, ‘Admittedly, my report isn’t flawless, but it isn’t as abysmal as Ms. Grant made it sound.’
‘In the past, she merely offered a gentle reminder for such issues. Why is she flying off the handle like this today?‘
This was just the start. For the next half–morning, most of the project team members faced Jessica’s wrath, leaving everyone tense and jittery.
People even instinctively tiptoed past her office door.
When Sana returned from Wesley’s counseling clinic, she noticed the strained atmosphere among colleagues.
Before she could inquire, a friendly coworker pulled her aside. “Sana, is Ms. Grant in a terrible mood today?”
“Huh? Why do you ask?” Sana looked puzzled. She hadn’t seen Jessica yet that day.
The coworker nodded knowingly. “Oh yeah. You wouldn’t believe how harsh she was this morning. She reprimanded almost everyone on the project team. If you need to report to her, triple–check your files for errors before stepping in.”
Sana thought the coworker was overreacting but thanked her for the heads–up.
After the coworker left, she went straight to Jessica’s office. “Jessi, are you here? Want to grab lunch?”
Jessica, focused on her work at the desk, looked up coldly. “Where were you this morning? As docked.”
Sana froze, taken aback by the accusation.

Chapter 258
She thought, Jessi really is being unusually harsh today!
After a beat, she asked cautiously, “Jessi, did someone tick you off?”
“No. I just think I’ve been too soft on everyone,” Jessica said flatly.
Sana was left speechless. She thought, confused, ‘This is true., but this has always been the routine. Why the sudden shift?”
At lunch, Sana watched in disbelief as Jessica ignored the food Sana had specially ordered–Jessica’s longtime favorite. Instead, Jessica stabbed her fork into the Indian curry on Sana’s plate. It was a dish she had previously refused to eat.
“Jessi, are you sure you’re okay? Even your food preferences have changed?” Sana asked.
“I’m fine certainly. This curry’s good. I’ll get another serving,” Jessica said without lifting her head.
Sana cringed. “But you used to hate curry. Could this be… pregnancy cravings?”
Before she could finish speaking, Sana watched as Jessica picked up an extra–spicy Buffalo Wing from her plate.
“This Buffalo Wing is pretty good too,” Jessica remarked.
She munched away with obvious enjoyment despite her usual aversion to spicy food, showing no hint of discomfort.
Sana fell completely silent.
Finally, she simply swapped her untouched plate with Jessica’s. “Jessi, have mine. I’ll grab more if you want
“Thanks.” Jessica didn’t stand on ceremony, digging into the new plate with relish.
Though baffled by the abrupt change in her appetite, Sana reassured herself at the sight of Jessica eating so heartily.
She thought, ‘It’s just a weird craving. I’ve heard some pregnant women go through this. As long as she’s eating, it’s not a big deal.‘
Recalling Jessica’s recent loss of appetite and watching her now scarfing down the food, Sana was relieved.
After Jessica finished, Sana even bought snacks based on her newfound preferences for the afternoon.
But the moment Jessica caught a whiff, she recoiled. “What’s that smell? It’s disgusting. Take it away now.”
“It doesn’t smell bad,” Sana said, stunned. She instinctively sniffed the bag. All she could smell was a mouthwatering sweet–and–sour aroma.
