Meanwhile, Wynter had arrived at the accident site in the outskirts on her superbike.
The area was already cordoned off with police tape. Not only were there officers collecting evidence, but there was also a swarm of media reporters hovering nearby.
Wynter knew she had to stay inconspicuous in front of the media. She was acutely aware of this case's complexity. Any investigation involving public scrutiny required balancing various pressures, and with Blake at the center of it all, she had to tread even more carefully.
Wynter walked toward a police officer guarding the tape. Pulling out her attorney credentials, she said, "Hello, I'm Blake Quinnell's lawyer. I need access to the accident site."
The officer took her ID, scrutinized it briefly, and then lifted the tape. "Go ahead."
Handing her a pair of gloves, he added, "Wear these and don't touch anything. Don't ruin the evidence."
Wynter nodded before entering the site. "Alright."
Inside the cordoned area, the investigation team had just finished compiling their preliminary report.
Wynter approached them. "Hello, I'm Blake Quinnell's lawyer. I'll need a copy of the accident site report."
One of the investigators glanced at her and handed her the document. "This just came out. Take it. It's a waste of your time, however. This incident has already been concluded."
As Wynter skimmed the report, her eyes stopped at the "Cause of Accident" section. The evidence and witness accounts overwhelmingly implicated Blake.
The sheer amount of evidence was suspicious, causing Wynter to furrow her brows. She didn't bother with the documents any longer.
Blake had mentioned a brake failure. Hence, she moved closer to examine his car.
Her heart tightened as she realized the modifications to the frame might be directly linked to the accident. Carefully, she observed the altered sections of the frame, looking for any possible clues.
She noticed some welding marks on the frame that appeared quite fresh—not something that was done during post-accident repair. Recognizing this as a potential lead, she began meticulously inspecting every corner of the frame.
At the back of the frame, in a concealed spot, she discovered a red string threaded with lucky tokens. There seemed to be some kind of mark on it.
Reaching out, Wynter took the severed red string out of the frame. Instantly, she realized that this was a spirit token.
The name itself revealed its ominous purpose. Some tokens were meant for the living to spend, while others were meant for the dead. To come into contact with a spirit token meant one's death was near.
Clearly, this accident wasn't as straightforward as it seemed. There was another layer to the truth.
