Chapter 96

Emily stood impassive, looking down imperiously at the suffering Xavier.

Even as he clutched desperately at her ankle, his terrified face full of pleading, her icy gaze made it clear that she was perfectly willing to just stand by and watch him succumb to his attack.

Images of Jackson’s dying moments kept flashing before Emily’s eyes. Every time she recalled the bitterness and disappointment when he spoke of Xavier, she thought coldly, ‘Xavier deserves to burn in hell for his sins.

But then, Jackson’s dying words flashed through Emily’s mind.

Emily’s tightly clenched fingers slowly relaxed. With a resigned sigh, she reached into Xavier’s inner coat pocket for his usual medication, then went out to call for help.

The only person Jackson ever truly cared about in this world was his younger brother.

Even when betrayed by him, Jackson could never bring himself to blame or resent him, even in his dying

moments.

The birthday party was supposed to be a grand occasion for the Jenkins family, but Xavier’s sudden attack threw the whole party into complete chaos. Seizing the opportunity, Emily quietly slipped away.

No one paid any attention to Emily’s whereabouts. Not even her own family, the Bennett family, knew she had gone to the Jenkins family’s birthday party that day.

Even though old Bob was already getting on in years and constantly shuttling between the Bennett family home and the hospital, he was still the only one who noticed Emily’s unusual comings and goings.

At first, he just assumed Emily was out having fun. After all, she’d always liked exploring, though she never stayed out all night.

Trusting her judgment, he never tried to interfere with her freedom.

But on the few occasions when Bob happened to run into Emily coming home, he couldn’t help but notice a strong, peculiar, greasy odor clinging to her.

‘Emily has always been particular about cleanliness since childhood, he thought, troubled. ‘She can’t stand any strange smells. So why does she keep coming back reeking like this?’

Bob couldn’t put his mind at ease. After some hesitation, he quietly arranged for someone to look into Emily’s situation.

He knew Emily hated having her privacy invaded, but the Bennett family’s attitude toward her had changed. Given her quiet nature, that she would never complain even when wronged, he was genuinely concerned.

Emily had no idea that Bob had already noticed her unusual behavior. She was torn, wondering if she should go see Xavier again.

Emily thought, ‘Before his death, Jackson entrusted me with two things: to ask Xavier a question and to deliver an

item to him.

‘But seeing Xavier in such a deranged and utterly unrepentant state, I just couldn’t bring myself to reveal Jackson’s dying wish. He doesn’t deserve Jackson’s wholehearted love.

But that was Jackson’s unfulfilled dying wish, and his eyes wouldn’t close to death until he got an answer.

Meanwhile, Xavier, fresh from waking up in the hospital, was equally torn about whether or not to see Emily again.

Xavier thought, ‘I genuinely never meant to hurt Jackson, and never imagined I’d one day hear of his death, especially after I was the one who sent him there.
