Chapter 157

Emily’s eyes brimmed with tears, but she was so overwhelmed she couldn’t find the words. She stammered, “Grandpa Charles.”

Charles set the papers aside, took off his reading glasses, and looked at her with a warm smile. He said, “Emily, you’re here. Come here, let me see you. Were you scared?”

Emily’s nose stung, and the tears she had been holding back finally spilled down her cheeks. She couldn’t hold it in any longer. She ran over and threw herself into Charles’s arms, calling out in a choked voice, “Grandpa Charles.”

Charles gently patted her head, his face full of warmth and affection. He said, “Don’t be scared, Emily. I’m still healthy as ever. I haven’t even seen you get married yet-how could I bear to leave you behind?”

Feeling the warm, steady hand on her head, Emily finally felt the weight that had been hanging over her heart lift. She couldn’t stop her tears. She buried her face deeper in Charles’s chest, crying silently.

She had been so terrified. Bob’s sudden accident and Charles’s coma had left her terrified that the two most important people in her life might both be taken away from her.

She had nothing left in this world. Even the reason she kept going was something others had given her. She didn’t dare imagine what would happen if Charles were gone.

She could only bury her face even deeper in his chest, trying to hide from that terrifying thought.

Feeling her arms clinging to him even tighter, Charles’s heart ached for Emily. He reached out and hugged her back, holding her close.

What they didn’t know was that at the hospital room door, which was left slightly open, Lydia was holding up her phone, snapping a photo of the moment.

Suddenly, Lucas called out from behind, “Lydia.”

His voice made Lydia jump and almost fly her phone away. She instinctively hid the phone behind her back, turning around with an awkward smile. “Lucas…”

Lucas’s curious gaze shifted to the hand she was hiding behind her back. Just as he was about to ask, Lydia quickly spoke up first. She asked, “Are you here to see Grandpa?”

She quickly tucked her phone away and gently nudged Lucas out of the room. She said, “Looks like Grandpa and Emily are having a good time talking. Let’s not go in and bother them.

“Grandpa Charles and Emily never really liked me anyway. If I show up now and butt in…

As the two of them walked away, Lydia’s voice faded into the distance, but it was pretty obvious she wasn’t saying anything

nice.

The commotion at the door wasn’t exactly quiet-Charles and Emily in the room heard it, but nobody bothered to care.

It wasn’t until Emily had calmed down that she wiped her tears and pulled away from Charles’s embrace. When she looked up, she saw the wet patch on his shirt.

Her face flushed with embarrassment, and she awkwardly rubbed her nose, her eyes just happening to land on the document by the bed. She asked, “What were you looking at just now, Grandpa Charles?”

Ever since Andrew took over as CEO of Bennett Group, Charles, even though he still held shares, had never really involved
