Chapter 155

Seeing Lucas and Lydia looking stunned, as if they had no idea what he was talking about, Charles spoke up again. He said, “Emily wouldn’t lash out at you for no reason. What did you do to make her act so extreme?”

Maybe it was because he had just woken up, but Charles’s voice was low and raspy-yet there was no mistaking the firmness

in it.

Lydia’s face went rigid-panic flashed in her eyes, but what really showed through was pure hatred.

All these years, she’d tried every trick she could think of to get rid of Charles, but nothing ever worked.

That was why, two years ago, after kicking Emily out, she’d plotted to kick Charles out of the Bennett Family too, just so he wouldn’t ruin her schemes.

But she never imagined that after two years, with one foot already in the grave, Charles would still be sharp as a tack.

Lydia forced down her anger, plastering on a look of fear and grievance as she tried to defend herself, “I didn’t do anything. Look at me-Emily’s the one who hit me. I swear, I didn’t do anything to her.”

Before she came, she’d deliberately made herself look even more miserable, and with that pitiful act, anyone watching would probably feel sorry for her.

But Charles stayed cold. He said, “Emily’s a gentle soul. If she actually laid a hand on you, it could only mean you bullied her first.”

The absolute certainty in his words almost made Lydia’s face contort. She shot a pleading look at Lucas, hoping he’d immediately step up and defend her like he always used to.

But Lucas just stood there, staring blankly at Charles, his chest feeling like it had been smashed by a sledgehammer. He thought, ‘Lydia looks so miserable, and she’s explained everything so clearly. Why does Grandpa still believe Emily?

‘No, that’s not right. I used to trust Emily more than anyone-even more than I trusted Mom, Dad, or Andrew. But when did that change? When did I start doubting everything Emily said or did?’

In the silent hospital room, Lydia was pinned under the oppressive gaze of Charles, feeling a kind of awkwardness she’d never experienced before. After hesitating for a moment, she carefully tugged at Lucas’s sleeve and called out in a small voice, “Lucas.”

Lucas snapped out of it and finally noticed how pale Lydia looked. He immediately asked with concern, “Lydia, what’s wrong?”

Lydia said, “I’ve just been crying so much these past few days because I was so worried about Grandpa.” Her eyes suddenly rolled back, and she collapsed right into his arms.

Lucas was startled and quickly caught her, all those swirling thoughts in his head vanishing in an instant. He shot an angry look at Charles and said, “Grandpa, Lydia’s always been in poor health.

“She hasn’t been eating or sleeping well because she’s so worried about you, and now Emily’s bullied her like this. How can you be so harsh with her?”

Charles had long seen how blindly the Bennett Family favored Lydia, and he wasn’t the least bit angry.

He thought, ‘If Lucas can turn his back on the sister he grew up with, it’s no shock he’d blame me—a grandfather who’s never

been close to him
