Chapter 135
Chapter 135
Tina watched Louisa fuss over someone else, completely ignoring her own health. Frustrated and helpless, she snapped, “Mom, why are you so eager to help Emily? She’s not even worth it!”
Louisa, still visibly agitated, gradually started to calm down. She knew Tina had always disapproved of her going out of her way for Emily. As mother and daughter, they had more than one heated argument about it.
But no matter how intense their arguments got, Tina never stopped her. For the first time, Louisa opened up to her daughter and said, “I’m not doing this because it’s worthwhile, nor is it for Emily. I’m doing it for myself.
She added, “I’ll never forget the look in Emily’s eyes when she was all alone and helpless, as if I were her last hope in this world.
“I know just how extremely talented Emily is, and her character simply wouldn’t allow her to plagiarize. That’s why I believe she has been framed.”
Maybe she’d gotten obsessed with digging into it. She hadn’t found any proof yet, but deep down, she was more and more convinced that Emily was innocent.
That was why she was overjoyed when she finally found the evidence. However, when she learned that the principal had destroyed it, she was so angry that she fainted from rage.
Louisa took a deep breath. “I knew full well that Emily was wronged, and that Emily had even come to plead with me. If I just turned a blind eye, I was afraid I would be haunted by guilt for the rest of my life.”
She wasn’t doing this for anyone but herself; just trying to keep her conscience clear. Tina wanted to argue but found herself at a loss for words.
Louisa asked, “Tina, of course Mom knows the wisest choice would be to turn a blind eye. But if she comes pleading to you, and you happen to know she’s innocent, could you really turn a blind eye and live with yourself?”
That question left Tina stumped. She thought to herself, ‘I don’t know what I would do. But I’m certain that I couldn’t live with that guilt weighing on me for the rest of my life.
Tina parted her lips as if about to speak, but in the end, she just bit her lower lip and turned her head away. The matter was over now, and with all the evidence gone, she didn’t want to argue with Louisa any longer.
Meanwhile, Emily finally let out a breath of relief after seeing the school’s new announcement. Given her situation going head-to-head with the principal would only backfire. But as for Yvonne, there was no way she was getting off easy.
Emily was so consumed with settling scores with Yvonne that she barely visited her rental apartment, completely unaware that Lucas had gone to see Austin.
When Austin saw Lucas show up, he was surprised but not exactly shocked. They hadn’t interacted much, but it was clear Lucas wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed and had a clingy streak.
After their last meeting, he’d already guessed that once Emily was out of sight, this guy would come looking for him. He just didn’t expect him to be this slow. Austin thought, ‘If he cared, why wait until now?’
Even more laughable was his first line when he burst in. “There’s two million in here. Take the money and get out
