Declan turned to look at her. Her eyes were swollen from crying, now filled with sorrow. Once, those same eyes had shone with happiness.

“Jennie, it’s windy out here. Go back inside,” Declan said before turning to leave.

Jennifer suddenly lunged forward, wrapping her arms around him from behind, and choked out, “No! Answer me, or I won’t let you leave.”

Declan frowned, irritation flaring up inside him. He replied in a low voice, “Jennie, let go.”

“No!” Jennifer shook her head, her voice thick with tears. “Have you forgotten what you promised me at the resort when we were eighteen?”

Declan froze for a moment, a flicker of hesitation flashing across his eyes. He pried her hands away and turned to face her. Then he said, “Jennie, I have never forgotten.”

That was why he had always tried his best to give her whatever she wanted. Even when he knew she had hurt Phoebe, he hadn’t blamed her.

“If you haven’t forgotten, then why won’t you divorce Phoebe?” Jennifer asked.

Declan didn’t respond. He didn’t understand why, but the thought of divorcing Phoebe just didn’t sit right with him.

Jennifer blinked, and tears streamed down her face. “Deck… you’ve fallen in love with Phoebe, haven’t you?

Declan’s eyes widened. He frowned and replied, “Jennie, don’t overthink it. I could never love her.”.

“If you don’t love her, then why won’t you divorce her? If it’s because she took care of you for those two years, there are so many other ways to repay her. You don’t have to sacrifice your entire life.

“I can help you repay her. As long as she’s willing to let you go, I’d do anything!”

Meeting Jennifer’s pleading gaze, Declan felt his throat go dry and tight. After a long pause, he said, “Jennie, let me think about it.”

Jennifer knew better than to push too hard. She nodded through her tears. “Alright, I’ll wait for you.”

The moment Declan left, Jennifer wiped away her tears, her eyes flashing with hatred. She knew if she wanted to be with Declan again, there was only one way–Phoebe had to be out of the picture entirely.

Not long after driving away from the Greene estate, Declan spotted Phoebe. She was walking slowly down the mountain road. She might be slender, but her posture was always upright, reflecting her resilience and strength.

Declan’s mind replayed Jennifer’s question at the gate of the Greene estate: whether he had fallen in love with Phoebe.

The answer was no. If he had, he wouldn’t have stood by while her family mistreated her, and he certainly wouldn’t have let Jennifer go after discovering Jennifer had schemed against her.

He reasoned that his recent discomfort stemmed from Phoebe’s change. She was no longer the quiet, submissive woman he once knew–now, she was beyond his control. He was sure that he was merely curious about her; he didn’t love her.

Declan sneered, “Phoebe, are you throwing a tantrum right now? Because I didn’t help you back at your patents‘ place?”

Phoebe smiled faintly. “If I were, would you care?”

“No.”

“Then whether I’m throwing a tantrum or not has nothing to do with you.”

Declan’s gaze darkened. “Phoebe, my patience has its limits.”

Phoebe’s smile deepened. “What a coincidence. So does mine. I don’t care who you like, Mr. Richardson, but you’d better keep her in check. If she schemes against me again, believe it or not, even you won’t be able to protect her,” she said sternly.

Declan was stunned. He gritted his teeth and asked, “What the hell do you mean by that?”

“The banquet for my grandfather’s birthday. Do I need to make it any clearer?”

At that moment, a Lamborghini pulled up in front of the Maybach. The next second, Mason stepped out of the car and walked toward Phoebe.
