Chapter 63

Perfect idea! Lucas jumped in We’w way too tiny to do it right, kule Adam’s got those strong hands!

trene started to object, but Lily was already running with the suggeon.

Plus, the pointed out, all matteroffact, Unde Adam’s been getting massages forever during his treatments. He totally knows the drill! And Thomas Uncle already admitted he’s clueless about medical stuff

Thomas, caught flatfooted, still nodded along. She’s got me there. Lest thing we need is me making it ten times worse?

Lily sidled up to Adam, unleashing those puppy dog eyes that could probably convince polar bears to buy ice. Uncle Adam, she cooed, voice dripping honey, can you please help Mommy? She’s realy hurting bad.

Adam sat still for a beat, mulling it over. The triplets held their breath so hard they might’ve turned blue if he’d waited any longer. Finally, he gave a slight nod.

If Dr. Sterling’s okay with it, I can lend a hand, he offered, voice carefully neutral. After all those treatments you’ve given me, I’ve picked up a trick or two.Fair’s fair, he thought, remembering countless times her expert touch had chased away his pain and gradually brought his legs back to life.

Irene hesitated, pride wrestling with practicality. She glanced from her angrylooking ankle to her throbbing wrist, finally throwing in the towel with a resigned sigh. Fine. Thanks.

Alex sprang into action with the efficiency of a tiny field medic, carefully lifting his mom’s leg and positioning her foot on Adam’s lap. Take good care of her, Uncle Adam,he instructed, face serious as a heart attack despite the victorious sparkle dancing in his

eyes.

Adam quirked an eyebrow, sharing a look with Irene. He could read the mix of embarrassment and surrender written all over her face. With doctorlike detachment, he gently cradled her ankle, assessing the damage.

Her ankle looked impossibly delicate in his grip, skin already flushed angryred with inflammation. The stark contrast between his large hands and her slender ankle wasn’t lost on either of them, though both kept poker faces firmly in place.

“Gonna need an ice pack first,Adam said, reaching into the medical kit’s minicooler. He grabbed an instant cold pack, activated it with a sharp crack, and wrapped it in a soft cloth before gently pressing it against the swelling.

Cold helps knock down the initial swelling,he explained, his touch surprisingly gentle for hands that looked like they could crush walnuts. We’ll let this chill things for a few minutes before the cream goes on.

Irene watched him, not bothering to hide her surprise. You’ve actually been paying attention during your treatments.

Something that might’ve been amusement flickered in Adam’s eyes. I’m a quick study. Always have been. His mouth quirked slightly. Funny how the tables have turned thoughnow I’m playing doctor, so you’ll need to be the patient patient.

Don’t sweat it,Irene shot back with a small smile. I can handle it. I’m tougher than I look.

While the ice pack worked its magic, Adam kept his hand steady, occasionally shifting it to make sure the cold hit all the right spots. The room settled into a comfortable quiet, broken only by the muffled sounds of three kids trying their absolute hardest to look worried instead of gleeful.

After a few minutes, Adam removed the ice pack and squeezed some of the antiinflammatory cream onto his palm. With methodical care, he began applying it to Irene’s ankle, his movements precise and measured.

Tell me if I press too hard,he said quietly.

It’s fine,Irene assured him, though her body tensed as pain shot though her ankle. Sweat beaded on her forehead as she tried to mask how much it actually hurt!

The triplets spotted their mom pain instantly, their excitement vanishing like ice cream on a hot sidewalk.

A tiny hand reached for Irene’s. She looked up to find Lily, big eyes swimming with tears about to spill over.

Mommy, no hurt,Lily whispered, her voice catching.

Irene mustered a smile through gritted teeth. It’s okay, sweetie. Mommy’s fine, really.

Lucas and Alex huddled closer, forming their own little protection squad.

Thomas watched them with a soft smile. Doc, these kiddos of yours? Seriously adorable. Makes a guy jealous.

They are,Irene chuckled softly, ruffling their hair. Complete little monsters sometimes, but mostly pretty sweet.

So Mom,Lucas piped up, which one of us is your absolute favorite!

I love you all exactly the same,Irene answered without missing a beat. You’re all my favorite little troublemakers.

Lily puffed her cheeks out like an angry chipmunk. No way! You gotta pick one!

Now you’ve stepped in it,Thomas snickered.

With the kidsplayful antics stealing her attention, Irene found the pain fading to the background, suddenly much more manageable.

Thomas observed the whole scene, wheels turning behind his eyes. His gaze bounced from Adam’s unusually gentle expression to Irene’s flushed cheeks, then landed on three kids practically vibrating with poorly hidden excitement. The pieces suddenly clicked into place.

Hold up, Thomas thought, watching the notsosubtle looks the triplets kept exchanging. Why do I get the feeling these kids are orchestrating something?

As Adam worked on Irene’s ankle, applying just the right pressure to work the medicine into the tissues, Thomas couldn’t help noticing how naturally they played off each other. Despite the weird circumstances, there was this easy backandforth between them that spoke volumes.

The real kicker, Thomas realized, wasn’t what was happeningit was what wasn’t. His boss, infamous for keeping everyone at arm’s length, hadn’t hesitated long before agreeing to play nurse. And Dr. Sterling, fiercely independent and professional to her core, had accepted his help without putting up much of a fight.

After what seemed like forever, Adam finally sat back. That should do it.
