Chapter 283
Glasses clinked and fake laughter bounced off the walls at the Snowfamily’s business event. Adam wore his best poker face while mentally counting down the minutes until he could leave. He’d parke his wheelchair in the sweet spot–near enough to seem interested, far enough to keep people from hanging around too long.
“Three years of research has shown incredible results with neural pathway stimulation, Natalie leaned in, her voice dropping to a near–whisper. “Especially for cases like yours.”
*Market potential looks promising,” Adam nodded. “But I’d need more clinical data before we jump in.”

Natalie’s smile didn’t falter as she touched his wheelchair. “Let me show you the presentation boards. I can push you if you’d like?”
Thomas stepped in smoothly. “I’ve got it, Miss Snow. Mr. Haven has specific preferences with his equipment.”
All evening, Natalie orchestrated “accidental” moments–her arm brushing his shoulder while pointing at projections, leaning close to speak over the music, even dropping a folder that left her perfume lingering on his sleeve.
By nine, Adam had hit his limit. “Need to head out. Early meeting tomorrow.”
Marcus, deep in conversation across the room, simply nodded at his son. He’d long since learned when not to push.
“Leaving already?” Natalie walked them to the door, her face falling. I was hoping we could talk more about the tech specs.”
“Another time,” Adam replied, not quite saying yes, not quite saying no.
Once in the car, he yanked his tie loose with unusual frustration. “Do I smell like perfume?”
Thomas leaned over, sniffed, and nodded. “Like you fell into Miss Snow’s perfume counter.”
Adam shrugged off his jacket, tossing it aside like it was contaminated. “Get this cleaned. Now.”
Thomas bit back a smile as he started the car. Five years ago, Adam wouldn’t have cared if a beautiful woman’s perfume stuck to him all night. Irene had changed more than just his ability to walk.
Twenty minutes later, James met them at the door, taking away the jacket without a word.
“Is Dr. Sterling here?” Adam asked, his shoulders already relaxing the moment he crossed the threshold.
“Yes, sir. She’s watching TV in the entertainment room.”
“Tell the kitchen I need dinner.”
After changing into comfortable clothes, Adam heard soft footsteps coming down the hall. Irene showed up in his doorway wrapped in a blanket, her hair hanging loose around her shoulders.
“Look who’s back from schmoozing with the rich and boring,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. Her eyes narrowed. “Let me
guess you skipped dinner again?”
“Got caught up,” Ada admitted, his usual edge completely gone. “Won’t happen again.”
“I’m not your mom,” Irene’s lips twitched upward. “No need to look like I’m about to ground you.”
Something about her standing there–completely at ease in his space–made the business world feel a million miles away.

Chapter 283
“Dinner’s ready. Join me?” he asked, already knowing her answer..
Already ate, but I’ll keep you company.” She moved behind his wheelchair with the easy familiarity of someone who’d done it a hundred times before.
As they moved through the quiet house, Adam noticed how comfortable silence felt with Irene. At the Snow event, every quiet moment had felt like a chess move. With her, being quiet felt like finally relaxing after a long, stressful day.
