The Intercom crackled. “Adam, ed you upstairs. Got a project for you to look at Marcus Haven’s voice carried authority even through cheap speakers..
Adam glanced at Thomas, who moved behind the wheelchair without a word. The elevator took them upstairs where Marcus sat at his big desk, papers spread out in front of him.
“Check this out,” he said, sliding a folder across the desk. “New medical tech project. Could be worth billions if it works out.”
Adam flipped through, quickly taking in the information. Looks good. Would fit with what we already do.” He glanced up. “Who’s behind it?”
“Snow family,” Marcus replied, watching his son carefully. “Their medical division has been developing it for three years.”

For a heartbeat, Adam’s expression before snapping back to neutral so fast only Thomas noticed. The slight tightening of his jaw spoke volumes.
“It could make money,” Adam said simply. “But we need to check it more carefully before we jump in.”
Marcus nodded. “They want a partner. There’s a party tonight to talk about working together.” He leaned back. ‘I already said we’d both come.”
Adam’s lips tightened. “I’ll look at it fairly,” he said, his voice cooling
Back in his office, Adam sent Irene a quick text.
Business thing tonight. Need to reschedule.
As he put his phone down, he suddenly thought of the kids‘ faces–how excited they looked with their medals, how they looked to him when that woman attacked them. The warm feeling surprised him before he pushed it away and got back to work.
The Snow house was all lit up, with music playing and waiters moving through crowds of rich people. In the corner, musicians played fancy music that nobody really paid attention to.
When Marcus and Adam came in, people stopped talking for a second, then started up again with new energy, everyone turning toward the father and son.
“Haven! Good to see you!” called out a banker, raising his glass. People from all over the room came over to shake hands and chat.
Adam was polite to everyone, saying all the right things without really connecting. He knew how to be in a room without letting anyone get too close.
“Mr. Haven, Adam! So glad you could come.” Mr. Snow walked up with Natalie beside him, smiling widely. “Such an honor.”
Natalie stood next to her father wearing a light–colored suit. “Good evening,” she greeted them with a professional smile that got warmer when she looked at Adam. “Thanks for coming.”
Mr. Snow smiled big. “Not many young men have your business smarts, Adam. Everyone knows about your success.”
Marcus smiled proudly. “My son knows a good deal when he sees one”
“Maybe we could talk more about our idea,” Mr. Snow started to say before someone called him away. “Sorry, just a minute.”
Within minutes, Marcus was talking with old friends, leaving Adam and Natalie standing together–so obviously planned it was
