Chapter 27: An Unexpected Touch
Irene was about to knock on Adam’s bedroom door when she stopped dead in her tracks. The door was slightly ajar, giving her an unexpected view that made her heart skip a beat.
Adam had already loosened his tic, the expensive silk hanging carelessly around his neck. His long fingers moved deliberately down his shirt, each button coming undone with practiced ease. Even such simple task carried that same commanding presence he brought to everything – methodical, precise, totally focused. The fable parted gradually, revealing glimpses of tanned skin underneath as he worked his way down.
He sat straight in his wheelchair, his back to the door, completely unaware of his audience. The warm evening light streaming through his windows caught the subtle shift of muscles across his shoulders as he shrugged one arm free of his shirt sleeve, then the other. It was like watching a sculptor’s masterpiece come to life, she couldn’t help but stare. For someone confined to a wheelchair, his physique was incredible – broad shoulders, perfectly sculpted back muscles, the kind of build that belonged on the cover of a fitness magazine.
Being a mother of three hadn’t prepared her for this. Despite all her years of medical training, Irene had never looked at a man’s body quite so directly before. Something about the unguarded intimacy of the moment made her distinctly uncomfortable.
Get a grip, she told herself. You’re literally a doctor. Bodies are your job. But somehow, this felt different. This wasn’t just any patient – this was Adam Haven, and catching him in such a private moment felt… wrong? Exciting? She didn’t want to examine that feeling too closely..
Behind her, Thomas cleared his throat softly, saving her from her spiraling thoughts. She jumped slightly as he stepped forward to knock on the door frame.
“Sir? Dr. Sterling is here.”
Adam didn’t turn around right away, his movements staying measured and deliberate. “Come in,” he said, his voice somehow managing to sound commanding even while half–dressed. He reached for what looked like pajamas on the bed, taking his time about,
Irene kept her eyes glued to the floor as she walked in. “I’ll get the therapeutic bath ready,” she said quickly, making a beeline for the bathroom. Anything to escape the weird tension in the air.
The bathroom became her sanctuary. This was familiar territory – checking water temperature, measuring out herbs and minerals with careful precision. Each ingredient had to be perfect. Too much of anything could mess up the treatment’s effectiveness. The rising steam carried the sharp, clean scent of medicinal herbs, helping clear her head.
“Twenty minutes should do it,” she called out to Thomas, scribbling down temperatures and measurements in her notes. Every detail mattered for tracking progress. “These herbs are meant to stimulate the nerves,” she explained to Thomas. “We can’t let him soak for too long, or it might cause adverse effects.”
“Got it, Dr. Sterling.”
After one final temperature check, she headed back into the bedroom. Adam had changed into what had to be the fanciest pajamas she’d ever seen – probably cost more than her entire wardrobe. She tried really hard not to notice how good they looked on him.
“Here.” She pulled out a small bottle of medication. “Take one before bed every night.”
Adam’s eyebrow shot up as he looked at the bottle. “And this is…?”
Something about his skeptical tone rubbed her the wrong way. “What worried I might poison you?” she snapped before she could stop herself. “Fine, if you don’t trust it-” She started to pull her hand back.
