Chapter 23

“Mr. Campbell, Ms. Stone is here,” the housekeeper said, her voice breaking the moment.

Yosef and Adam both stiffened, their faces tightening.

Adam’s expression crumpled, his voice small but fierce. “Daddy, I don’t want her here.”

Yosef didn’t get why his son hated the woman who’d given birth to him.

Elianna had helped him a lot, and she was Adam’s mom. Sure, he wasn’t thrilled about her acting like she owned the place, but he wouldn’t embarrass her.

“Let her in,” he said, keeping his tone steady.

“Daddy!” Adam’s voice broke, full of hurt. “I said I don’t want her!”

“Adam, she’s your mom,” Yosef said, softening but firm.

Adam’s chest heaved, his words spilling out fast. “She’s not my mom! I don’t have a bad mom like her!”

“I have my real mom, and it’s not her. It’s not!” he said, his voice shaking.

Ever since he’d seen his true mother, Adam refused to accept Elianna, his dislike turning into full–blown hatred.

‘It’s all her fault,‘ he thought, ‘that Mom has left me and Daddy, that she doesn’t want me anymore.’

The more Adam thought about it, the madder he got, his emotions spiraling.

His face turned pale, and he grabbed his chest, whimpering in pain. “It hurts…”

“Adam!” Yosef’s heart skipped a beat.

The housekeeper hurried over with a bottle of pills and a glass of water.

Yosef carefully gave Adam the medicine, watching as his breathing calmed. He let out a relieved breath, then turned to the housekeeper. “Call Dr. Cameron. Now.”

Adam, worn out from the episode, fell asleep, his small body damp with sweat.

Yosef gently peeled off his son’s sweaty shirt, rolling up his own sleeves. He wrung out a warm towel and wiped Adam down, then put him in clean pajamas.

Cameron arrived, checking Adam’s vitals with ease.

“Just a flare–up from emotional stress,” Cameron said, packing his bag. “He’s stable now.”

“But you’ve got to keep his stress low,” he added, serious. “Too many episodes like this could be risky.”

Yosef nodded, his jaw tight. “Got it, Cameron.”

“Thanks for coming,” he said. “You can head out”

Cameron grabbed his bag and left.

Yosef ran a hand over Adam’s forehead–no fever.

Usually, these attacks caused other problems, but this time, they’d lucked out.

Sir,” the housekeeper sald, standing at the door. “Ms. Stone is still waiting outside, Should I let her in?”

Yosef glanced at his sleeping son and stood. “Yeah, bring her in.”

He slipped out quietly, shutting the door behind him.

Elianna had been waiting outside for nearly twenty minutes, her feet throbbing in her high heels.
