"Yingying is here!"
Madam Weng saw Ye Yueying enter the house and quickly beckoned her to sit beside her.
Ye Yueying walked over to Madam Weng but didn’t sit down immediately. Instead, she stood by the brazier to dispel the chill lingering on her body.
Madam Weng noticed this, pulled Ye Yueying over, touched her ice-cold hands, and her expression darkened: "Why are your hands so cold? Was your aunt giving you trouble again?"
Ye Yueying shook her head with a smile: "No, I stayed outside a little longer because the snowy scenery was simply too beautiful."
Madam Weng held Ye Yueying close, sighed inwardly, and gently stroked her granddaughter’s hands. She knew all too well the kind of person her eldest daughter-in-law was—kind on the surface, cruel at heart. These years, her treatment of Yueying had always been cold and dismissive.
"Yingying, do you remember the second son of the Qi Family?"
Upon hearing this, Ye Yueying abruptly raised her head to look at Madam Weng, then slowly lowered it again: "Grandmother, I don’t want to get married yet."
Madam Weng took hold of Ye Yueying’s hands: "Silly girl, how can a young lady not think of marriage? The second son of the Qi Family seems to me an excellent match—gentle in character, handsome in appearance, and well-versed in knowledge. He’s someone you could entrust your life to."
"Besides, Madam Qi isn’t someone prone to tormenting others. And the Qi Family is merely a Sixth-rank household under your uncle’s official position. If you marry there, you surely won’t be treated poorly."
Ye Yueying lowered her gaze and remained silent, wishing to object but swallowing the words before they escaped her lips. She knew her grandmother had spent considerable effort—and offered much consideration—in selecting the Qi Family’s second son as her prospective groom. To refuse would be an ungrateful affront.
Madam Weng could see her granddaughter’s reluctance and patiently encouraged her: "A young lady’s finest years are fleeting. You’ll turn eighteen next year, and delaying further will only make finding a good match more difficult."
"While I still have the strength in these old bones, I must ensure your future is settled. Otherwise, when I pass to the afterlife, how can I face your parents?"
Hearing Madam Weng say this made Ye Yueying unable to voice her objections. She simply leaned silently into her grandmother’s embrace, listening without a word.
Madam Weng gently stroked her granddaughter’s hair, her eyes filled with tenderness: "If your parents were still here, they’d surely wish for you to marry a fine man, enjoy marital harmony, and have countless descendants." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Thinking of her parents, Ye Yueying felt a sting in her nose and tears welled up in her eyes.
...
After leaving Madam Weng’s quarters, Ye Yueying wandered aimlessly in the snow. Xue Hua called her back to the house several times, but she didn’t respond.
Was she really going to marry the second son of the Qi Family?
But why did her heart ache so much, filled with reluctance?
Unknowingly, Ye Yueying found herself near the back gate of the Weng Residence.
Listening to the bustling sounds from the street beyond the wall, the confusion in Ye Yueying’s eyes gradually transformed into resolve, as if she had reached some decision.
Ye Yueying looked at Xue Hua: "Take some silver and give it to the gatekeeper. I want to leave the residence to see Uncle Leng."
Xue Hua hurriedly replied: "I’ll accompany you, Miss."
Ye Yueying shook her head, refusing: "You stay here and wait for me. Otherwise, I might not be able to enter again when I return."
Upon hearing this, Xue Hua could only nod in agreement.
Using silver to buy off the gatekeeper, Ye Yueying left the Weng Residence swiftly and headed straight for the neighboring street.
She didn’t want to marry so hastily. Grandmother’s insistence on her marrying was merely out of concern that the Weng Family wouldn’t treat her well after her passing.
If that was the case, she would transfer her household registration to Uncle Leng’s name.
Uncle Leng treated her like his own daughter. With him to take care of her, Grandmother should be able to find peace of mind.
Of course, Ye Yueying had considered establishing her own household. However, the requirements for doing so were excessively stringent—requiring signatures from all her relatives.
Her uncle and aunt would never agree to it. Why? Because when Ye Yueying sought refuge with the Weng Family, she brought all the Ye Family’s assets with her.
To secure the Ye Family’s wealth—and avoid being seen as cruel to their niece—they would never allow her to establish her own household.
