Youzhou Prefecture.
Weng Family’s main courtyard.
Ye Yueying stood beneath the eaves, silently watching the white snow falling in flurries.
It had been half a month since she returned with Leng Feng, and once again, she became the orphaned cousin living in her maternal family’s home. Every day, she was required to promptly visit the main courtyard to pay respects to her eldest aunt by marriage.
Whenever her eldest aunt was in a foul mood, Ye Yueying would be made to wait outside the doors for two to three periods of time, regardless of the sweltering heat of summer or the bitter chill of winter!
Ye Yueying’s gaze calmly swept over the unmoving door curtain, and she pondered inwardly: her eldest aunt must have been provoked somewhere again. It was still early in the morning, and yet here she was throwing tantrums!
"Young Lady!"
Having learned that Ye Yueying was once again left outside by the Madam, her nursemaid, Ye Shi, hurriedly brought her a hand warmer.
Accepting the hand warmer with a faint smile, Ye Yueying said softly, "I’m all right, but I’m suddenly craving some yam soup. Nursemaid, hurry back to the courtyard and prepare it for me."
Ye Shi understood that Ye Yueying was trying to dismiss her, avoiding the possibility of stirring up unnecessary trouble by being seen by the people in the main courtyard.
Nodding, Ye Shi promptly left the main courtyard.
As soon as she exited, tears welled up in Ye Shi’s eyes. Thinking of her young lady’s icy cold hands when she handed over the warmer, she couldn’t help but feel deeply aggrieved.
How is it that Madam Weng, the young lady’s aunt by marriage, could show no mercy or kindness—a true lack of compassion for the younger generation?
Her dear young lady, once the apple of the Ye Family’s eye, cherished by her parents like precious jewels, had never endured such mistreatment back then.
But now, with the Ye Family gone, her young lady had become nothing more than an outlet for Madam Weng to vent her anger.
Watching the snow fall heavier and heavier, Ye Shi thought of going to the Old Madam’s courtyard but hesitated before sighing and giving up.
The young lady didn’t want to trouble the Old Madam, nor did she want the Old Madam to be forced into disputes with the Madam. As a result, the burden fell squarely on Ye Yueying herself.
Inside the upper chamber, the brazier was burning brightly, warming the room to the point of feeling like spring.
Madam Weng sat leisurely at the vanity table, slowly selecting jewelry, while the eldest and second Weng daughters were seated at the dining table nearby, enjoying steaming bowls of snow fungus porridge.
After finishing her bowl of porridge, the eldest Weng daughter made a token inquiry, "Mother, aren’t you going to let Yueying come inside?"
Before Madam Weng could respond, the second Weng daughter had already interjected, "She should stay outside for a while to clear her head. What kind of young lady wanders off for two months at a time?"
"She may not care about her reputation, but our family does."
"She’s staying in our household now; her every action affects the Weng Family’s reputation. Spending two months out and about—if word gets out, who knows how our family will be judged?"
The eldest Weng daughter didn’t contradict her younger sister, nor did she challenge the exaggeration embedded in her words.
Ye Yueying had traveled with Leng Feng, an elder accompanying her, which made it nothing out of the ordinary.
"But it’s snowing outside now; if she catches a cold, it might be difficult to explain to Grandmother," the eldest Weng daughter remarked half-heartedly.
Rolling her eyes, the second Weng daughter sneered, "Grandmother is just biased. Ye Yueying acts all cold and indifferent, as though everyone owes her something—I can’t understand why Grandmother favors her."
Madam Weng finally spoke up, chuckling as she addressed her daughters, "Your grandmother pities her; after all, the poor girl is an orphan—both her parents are gone."
The second Weng daughter instantly added, "She’s certainly blessed with tough luck then; everyone in the Ye Family is dead, but she’s still alive."
The comment was vicious, yet Madam Weng and the eldest Weng daughter reacted as though it were perfectly normal, showing just how accustomed the three were to such conversations.
Judging the timing appropriate, Madam Weng eventually ordered a maid to summon Ye Yueying in.
Ye Yueying entered the room with a calm demeanor, performing a proper courtesy before Madam Weng. "Greetings, Eldest Aunt."
