To prevent news from leaking, the canyon was sealed off. Ye Yueying and Ren Feng could only stay in the tent to recover from their injuries, while Xiao Moxi was busy investigating evidence of Ren Feng’s crimes and hadn’t been seen for days.
After drinking her medicine, Ye Yueying wandered through the canyon. Looking at the surroundings, both familiar and unfamiliar, her mind was filled with joyful memories of time spent with her family during her childhood.
Unfortunately, as she approached the cave and saw Ren Feng imprisoned in the cage, those happy images shattered like broken glass, piece by piece fading away.
Within the cage, Ren Feng, shackled with handcuffs and leg irons, immediately recognized Ye Yueying as one of his would-be assassins. He glared at her with fierce eyes.
Ye Yueying stared back expressionlessly at Ren Feng inside the cage.
The two stared at each other from a distance in silence.
After a while, it was Ren Feng’s gaze that first wavered.
It wasn’t for any reason other than his sudden realization: the person before him looked somewhat familiar, resembling an old acquaintance from his memory.
Something clicked in Ren Feng’s mind, and he grasped the iron bars of the cage tightly, staring directly at Ye Yueying. "Yingying?"
Ye Yueying remained silent, saying nothing.
There was no need for her to answer; Ren Feng had already confirmed that the person before him was indeed the daughter of his sworn brother. Thinking about everything he had done to the Ye Family, his expression betrayed a fleeting moment of guilt and shame.
Ye Yueying had originally intended to ask Ren Feng face-to-face why he had killed the father who had not only saved his life but treated him as a brother. But on second thought, she realized it didn’t matter anymore and turned to leave.
"You killed Feihong, didn’t you?"
Ren Feng suddenly spoke.
Ye Yueying turned back to look at Ren Feng and saw him closing his eyes in pain, a twisted sense of satisfaction from avenging his son flickering on his face.
Ren Feng quickly opened his eyes, staring coldly at Ye Yueying with regret in his gaze. "I should’ve ended you back then when I had the chance."
Hearing this, Ye Yueying sneered, walking deliberately toward the cave. She stopped about a meter away from the cage and spoke word by word to Ren Feng:
"By your logic, then my father, who rests in the underworld, shouldn’t have been soft-hearted and saved the life of an ungrateful wolf like you, should he?"
Ren Feng, who had moments earlier sounded self-righteous, now seemed to falter under the blazing intensity of Ye Yueying’s gaze. He hesitated and averted his eyes in embarrassment. "It was your father. He wanted to cut off my source of wealth!"
Ye Yueying shouted, "What about the rest of my family? Why did you have to wipe them out? Wasn’t my grandmother kind to you? Didn’t my second uncle admire you like an elder brother? How could you bring yourself to kill them?"
Ren Feng let go of the iron bars and sat with his back to Ye Yueying. "Blame your father; he was a stubborn fool. He insisted on investigating the officials I co-mined silver with and planned to report the names to the Imperial Court. Could I afford to let him live?"
"Illegally mining silver is a crime punishable by the extermination of one’s entire clan."
Ye Yueying sneered. "So, you decided it was necessary to massacre the entire Ye Family?"
Ren Feng snorted coldly. "Who told your father to hide the list? The deaths of the Ye Family were all caused by him."
Seeing that he still refused to take responsibility even now, Ye Yueying scoffed. "You’re nothing but a selfish, despicable scoundrel. Saving you was my father’s biggest mistake."
With that, she stopped wasting words on him and turned to leave.
As she turned, she saw Xiao Moxi standing not far away.
...
"You’ve known my identity for a while now, haven’t you?"
By the river, Ye Yueying gazed at the flowing water as she softly asked Xiao Moxi beside her.
Xiao Moxi replied, "Investigating the identities of those involved is standard procedure for the Jinling Guard."
Ye Yueying turned to look at Xiao Moxi. "So that’s why you kept coincidentally appearing in front of me?"
Xiao Moxi quickly explained, "The first few times were purely accidental. Later, when the trail went cold, I sought you out intentionally."
Ye Yueying turned her gaze away. "It doesn’t matter anymore. None of that is important now."
Seeing her demeanor, Xiao Moxi added, "Ye Brother, I never intended to use you for anything."
Ye Yueying glanced at him but didn’t respond. Instead, she handed Xiao Moxi a slip of paper. "My father... he did investigate Ren Feng and left behind a list. I hid it in Haqi City. Here’s the address—see if it’s of any use to you."
Xiao Moxi solemnly accepted the paper. If Ren Feng was willing to wipe out the Ye Family over it, the list was undoubtedly significant.
Perhaps stirred by memories of seeing Ren Feng or maybe because she finally had someone to confide in, Ye Yueying began recounting the Ye Family’s downfall to Xiao Moxi.
