In the alley behind the Prince Residence, Xiao Mokuan glanced around nervously, his face betraying the fear that someone might discover him.
In stark contrast, the twins held hands, jumping and skipping behind him with joyful smiles plastered on their faces, their demeanor showing sheer delight as if they were out on a playful adventure.
Seeing the twins acting as though this were an outing, Xiao Mokuan felt a pang of frustration, along with a faint hesitation. However, that hesitation was quickly suppressed.
Everything he did now was for his father—so long as Father ascended to the throne, everything he’d done would be deemed worthwhile.
Soon, the three of them reached the alley’s entrance.
A nondescript carriage stood waiting there, and Xiao Mokuan hurriedly ushered the twins inside.
Inside the carriage, Daomiao asked Xiao Mokuan, "Sixth Brother, where are you taking us?"
Xiao Mokuan replied with a smile, "Just strolling around town."
The twins didn’t ask further but obediently sat in the carriage, lifting the curtains and curiously observing the street scenes outside.
Xiao Mokuan initially wanted to stop them but feared they’d cause a fuss, so he left them be.
Elsewhere, Xiao Moreng had come to the Prince Residence to find Daozi. After discussing academic matters for a while, he asked about the twins.
"Sixth Brother was here just now. Daomang and Daomiao are probably playing with him."
Xiao Moreng frowned slightly, stood up, and said, "Let’s go check."
"Alright."
Daozi led Xiao Moreng straight to Pingxi Hall, and after searching thoroughly, they couldn’t find Xiao Mokuan or the twins.
Finally, near the back gate, they ran into anxious maids and older servants searching for the twins.
Upon learning that Xiao Mokuan had taken the twins and vanished, Xiao Moreng felt a rush of unease and quickly instructed the maids and older servants to notify Daohua.
Daozi noticed Xiao Moreng’s serious expression and asked in confusion, "Fourth Brother, what’s wrong?"
Xiao Moreng furrowed his brows. "Sixth Brother might mean harm to Daomang and Daomiao."
Daozi’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Why?"
Xiao Moreng gazed at Daozi solemnly. "Because of power."
During their time in Beijing, Daozi had matured considerably, and he immediately grasped Xiao Moreng’s meaning: "They want to capture the younger siblings to threaten my father?"
Saying this, he grabbed Xiao Moreng and ran toward Pingxi Hall.
Xiao Moreng quickly pulled him back. "What are you doing?"
Daozi didn’t turn his head. "Getting Dogbao. We’re going to rescue the younger siblings."
Xiao Moreng retorted, "You don’t even know where they are. How can you rescue them?"
Daozi answered confidently, "Dogbao knows. Dogbao’s nose is super sharp. It’ll definitely find the younger siblings!"
Dogbao was a puppy born to a hunting dog and raised by Daozi from birth. Daozi insisted on bringing Dogbao with him when leaving Xiliang.
After grabbing Dogbao, Daozi went to find Daohua and directly declared, "Mother, Sixth Brother took the younger siblings out of the residence. I need to rescue them."
Daohua had always believed that children shouldn’t be overly sheltered and that firsthand experience often taught more effectively than lectures. Knowing there wasn’t significant danger, she didn’t stand in his way.
Seeing how easily Daohua agreed, Xiao Moreng was visibly taken aback.
Daohua smiled at Xiao Moreng and said, "Moreng, Daozi doesn’t understand many things yet. You must help me look after him more carefully."
Xiao Moreng quickly nodded in agreement.
With Daohua’s consent, Daozi grabbed Xiao Moreng and dashed out of the residence.
...
Meanwhile, Xiao Mokuan had the servants drive the carriage around town for a while before stopping in front of an inn.
"Let’s go! Sixth Brother is taking you to eat something."
Xiao Mokuan led the twins into the inn.
However, contrary to the twins’ expectations of eating delicious food in a private room, Xiao Mokuan brought them to the woodshed in the backyard.
Once the woodshed doors closed, Xiao Mokuan’s demeanor changed completely—gone were the kindness and warmth from before.
As Xiao Mokuan stood with his back to the twins, pondering how to trick them into remaining calm, Daomang suddenly spoke up: "Sixth Brother, are you kidnapping us?"
The unexpected comment startled Xiao Mokuan, who turned back in shock to see the twins staring at him with wide open eyes.
Before Xiao Mokuan could respond, Daomiao and Daomang hand in hand began investigating the woodshed.
"Mother was right—people who kidnap kids like to lock them in woodsheds."
"This woodshed doesn’t even have windows. How are we supposed to escape from here?"
"Don’t be scared. Father and Mother will definitely come save us. We won’t be stuck here forever."
Watching the twins critically evaluate the woodshed, Xiao Mokuan felt utterly unsettled.
What was going on? The twins seemed to know he intended to kidnap them!
