Officials impeached the Crown Prince, but the Emperor paid no heed and continued to have him enter and exit Qianqing Palace daily to assist in reviewing memorials. This unsettled the Sixth Prince and Concubine Shu.
The Emperor’s attitude caused the officials’ opinions to begin to shift.
The Sixth Prince noticed that more officials were privately seeking ties with the Crown Prince than ever before.
This was entirely contrary to their expectations.
According to Concubine Shu’s plan, the Second and Fifth Princes were to be brought down, and the Crown Prince blamed, removing all three from the equation, leaving the Sixth Prince to stand unchallenged before the Emperor and the court.
But now, the Emperor was favoring the Crown Prince more than ever!
The Sixth Prince grew restless and went to Changchun Palace again.
When Concubine Shu saw him, her expression darkened slightly. "Didn’t I tell you to visit here less during this time?"
The Sixth Prince spoke urgently, "Mother, Father is now showing even more favor to Eldest Brother than before—how can I sit still?"
Concubine Shu frowned. "You must sit still even if you can’t. How can you be a stable emperor if you’re so impatient?"
The Sixth Prince protested, "Mother, let’s not talk about being an emperor for now; can’t we first secure the title of Crown Prince?"
Concubine Shu’s face turned stern. "The matter of establishing the Crown Prince requires your father’s approval, and even now, he has given no definitive response." A cold light flashed in her eyes as she spoke.
"Sometimes, the throne is even easier to obtain than the title of Crown Prince!"
Upon hearing this, the Sixth Prince’s jaw dropped in shock. He jumped to his feet, glancing around nervously. Seeing that there was no one else in the palace but them, he finally exhaled deeply.
"Mother, how could you even think of such things?!"
These words were almost squeezed out from between the Sixth Prince’s clenched teeth.
Concubine Shu glanced at the Sixth Prince, her heart filled with disappointment. Compared to the Third Prince who had been exiled to guard the Imperial Mausoleum, this son was far inferior.
Not wanting to talk further with the Sixth Prince, Concubine Shu directly inquired, "Did Mokuan manage to get any information about the twins? When are Xiao Yeyang and the others returning to Xiliang?"
She was still wary of Xiao Yeyang’s capabilities and strategies. Back when the Third Prince failed, Xiao Yeyang had played no small role in it.
The Sixth Prince responded, "The twins are too young; they’re good at playing but know nothing about serious matters. Mokuan has asked multiple times but hasn’t gotten any definitive answers."
Saying this, he glanced at Concubine Shu.
"Mother, why are you so concerned about whether Xiao Yeyang returns to Xiliang or not?"
Concubine Shu shot a sidelong glance at the Sixth Prince and said hauntingly, "Your father fully trusts the Prince Residence of Ping An. If it were just the Prince of Ping An, that wouldn’t matter—he’s useless. But Xiao Yeyang is different. If he stays in Beijing, certain things will be hard to accomplish."
The Sixth Prince frowned deeply. "Mother, what exactly are you planning? We only need to bring down Eldest Brother; then the position of Crown Prince will naturally be mine!"
Concubine Shu gave him a cold stare and said, "You only care about your position as Crown Prince. Haven’t you thought about your Third Brother? You read the letter last time as well—his health is worsening. He needs to be retrieved and properly cared for, or else his longevity will be at risk!"
The Sixth Prince’s expression shifted. "Mother, what are you planning?"
Concubine Shu replied, "I’m planning nothing. I only want to bring your Third Brother back as soon as possible."
The Sixth Prince grew anxious. "Mother, you must not act recklessly. The Third Brother is your son, but so am I!"
Watching the Sixth Prince’s mixture of fear and panic, Concubine Shu smiled slightly. "Of course. The throne is yours. As for your Third Brother, I only wish for him to live a safe and long life."
Seeing that the Sixth Prince still wanted to argue, Concubine Shu reassured him, "You don’t need to worry about the Crown Prince. I will deal with him for you. That’s enough for now—I’m tired. Leave, and remember to come here less frequently in the future."
The Sixth Prince left Changchun Palace with a heavy heart. Thinking back to the near-manic glint in his mother’s eyes earlier, a growing unease stirred within him.
...
"Daomang, Daomiao, Qianqing Palace is too cramped. How about I take you two outside to ride scooters?"
Xiao Mokuan came over as usual to play with the twins.
Daomang, feeling dissatisfied with the limited space, immediately agreed. "Alright!"
Riding scooters around the palace was no novelty for the twins. The palace maids and eunuchs didn’t find it strange either, and Xiao Mokuan easily led the twins out of Qianqing Palace.
Guided by him, the twins zoomed around the palace corridors at high speed.
At the same time, in front of a desolate, abandoned palace, the Crown Prince glanced warily around. Confirming there was no one nearby, he swiftly entered the palace gates.
To outsiders, the Crown Prince—now in the Emperor’s favor—ought to be basking in spring winds. Yet only he knew how precarious his days were.
"Didn’t I tell you not to seek me out during this time?"
Suppressing his voice to the lowest whisper, the Crown Prince directed his words at the beautiful young woman before him. If a palace maid were present, she would undoubtedly recognize this person as the Emperor’s recently favored Consort Li.
"I’m pregnant!"
