"Firebird!"
"The immortal phoenix of eternal rebirth!"
Gasps echoed across Soulforge Mountain.
Legend had it that the Netheris Firebird was the soul-bound companion of Celestine of Netheris.
Ten thousand years ago, sickened by the corruption of tyrants and rogue overlords, Celestine cast herself into the Wraithvale, vowing never to be reborn.
Her firebird followed her into the abyss.
She left behind a prophecy—only when a hero rose to defy the tyranny of all realms would the firebird blaze forth once again in resurrection.
Now, from the infernos of the Wraithlands, the firebird soared back into the skies of Netheris.
What did this mean?
Could it be that the chosen one Celestine foretold had finally arrived?
Thousands of eyes turned skyward in stunned silence.
The massive firebird hovered high above the peak, its gaze fierce, and its presence defiant.
With a piercing cry, it split the sky.
Every citizen and warrior of Netheris dropped to their knees.
Then came a gust of wind, and with it, a silver-haired figure cloaked in flowing white descended like judgment itself. Two beauties flanked on his sides.
"Mr. Ramsey!" Arthur was the first to rush forward.
Seeing the coldness in Robin's eyes and his white hair, Arthur broke into sobs. "Mr. Ramsey, what happened to you?"
Robin yanked him up before he could kneel. He urged, "Step aside. Be quiet. Don't interfere when I kill."
Hacyon shuddered violently.
She stared at Robin's unyielding back, fully aware of what was about to happen.
"Mr. Ramsey!" Arthur knelt before him, pleading. "My sister lost her mind—she didn't mean to—please ... "
Robin seized him by the throat and flung him more than 30 yards away. "Anyone who tries to stop me dies. Now get lost."
Varryn dropped to his knees before Robin. "Please, Mr. Ramsey! Just one moment!"
Robin lifted his eyes and asked, "You ready to die now? Fine. Let's get it over with."
"Please allow me to give you this before you do." Varryn pulled out a glimmering winterglass key.
"My father entrusted me with a sacred relic before his death; this is our secret," he said. "He told me it was the Aether Codex, an ancient book chronicling the path through the Aethergate.
"My father told me, it was a book—one that records the path to the Aethergate: The Aether Codex. He said it must be entrusted only to the one who brings the Netheris Firebird back to life.
"If that person didn't appear in my generation, then it would be passed to the next. And if not that generation, then the one after ... passed down endlessly, until the destined one finally appeared! He said the day the firebird returns would be the day all realms awaken.
"That hero will bring judgment—a blade to cut down all who are wicked, hypocritical, corrupt, or tyrannical! Mr. Ramsey ... you are the chosen one the Seaborns have awaited across 30 generations! This key opens the vault that guards the Aether Codex. Please take it.
"The Codex is hidden in the Light Keep of Mount Zhisall. My duty is done. Take my life if you must. Hacyon deserves death for her treachery. And I, too, have failed as a father. All I ask is mercy for my son, Arthur. Please, Mr. Ramsey—do what you must."
Suddenly, Hacyon cried out, offering a winterglass case to Kage.
"Your Holiness! The Aether Codex is with me! You hold the Dragon-Slaying Dagger. Strike him down!"
Varryn's eyes widened as he saw the case. In a flash, he lunged forward. "How could my own blood become this monster?! Give me back the Codex!"
