Chapter 417
He’d gone back and investigated everything again, and he knew just what Emily had suffered because of Lydia while she was with the Bennett residence. The guilt weighed heavily on him.
But he still couldn’t wrap his head around what she meant when she said, “Every day I had to fight just to get a bite to eat, and I was bullied nonstop. Even when I wanted to die, I had to push through.”
St. Gabriel Reform Academy might have strict rules and cut off contact with the outside world, but at the end of the day, it was just a tough school. Andrew thought, ‘How could it really have been as awful as she made it sound?’
Andrew was more perceptive than he let on. Even though he kept telling himself that Emily was probably just saying things off the cuff, he couldn’t help replaying those words in his mind.
In the end, he decided to come to Emily and get the truth straight from her. Maybe if he could get the whole story, he’d understand just how much anger she still had.
When Emily heard that was why he wanted to see her, she shot him a weird look. “Why are you so curious about that, Mr. Bennett?”
Andrew’s expression was sincere. “I just want to care about you.”
“Care about me?” Emily laughed, as if she’d just heard a joke.
“That’s funny. I’ve been out of St. Gabriel Reform Academy for over a year, and now you care?” she asked.
Andrew looked a bit awkward. “I’m sorry. This is all Lydia’s fault. If she hadn’t messed with us through the system, we would never have kept ignoring you or hurt you so badly.
“Emily, I swear this will never happen again. Just give us a chance to make it up to you, okay?”
He looked so earnest. There couldn’t be anyone more sincere than him. But just because his apology was sincere didn’t mean he’d be forgiven.
Emily didn’t even bother to look up. “If you’re so curious about what my life was like there, Mr. Bennett, why don’t you go ask Vincent? Just hope you don’t get too scared when you finally learn the whole truth.”
