“This so–called marriage agreement was just my way of keeping you by my side, hoping that you’d slowly fall in love with me.”

Stella’s tears kept streaming down her face. “Why is my life so hard? Why did I have to end up like this? No one loves me. No one ever cares

about me.”

“I feel the same way!” Jordan said. Maybe because they were both speaking from the heart, Jordan started to feel sad too. They just kept talking, pouring out their hearts, and before they knew it, Stella had fallen asleep.

Jordan watched her sleep, his hand never leaving her. He stayed by her side, and eventually drifted off to sleep beside her.

The next morning, when Stella woke up, she found herself cradled in a warm hand. She looked at the hand, and then at its owner, and saw

Jordan watching her.

Stella was startled and sat up quickly. “I… I…” she stammered. She realized she was in her own room, and then glanced at Jordan again.

Jordan tried to move, but his hand had gone numb.

When Stella saw his face twist in pain, she rushed over and immediately started to massage his arm. “Are you okay?” she asked.

“Don’t. Just let me sit for a minute and let it recover on its own,” he said.

“I’m sorry, I… I didn’t know,” Stella said, looking flustered.

Jordan kept his eyes on her, and then let a small smile slip. “It’s nothing, just need a minute to recover.”

“I think I drank too much last night. I can’t remember much after that,” Stella said, frowning as she tried to recall.

“But you said you didn’t drink much,” Jordan teased.

Once he finished with Jordan, the doctor gave Stella a few needles as well. They hadn’t had breakfast yet. Luckily, the acupuncture didn’t take long. While they were eating, Stella kept sneaking glances at Jordan.

Jordan couldn’t help but smile. “If you’ve got something to say, just say it. No need to keep sneaking looks at me.”

“Why didn’t you push me away last night?” she blurted out.

“You were crying. I figured you needed someone to stay with you,” he replied gently.

Stella froze. “I was crying?”

Jordan didn’t want to talk about it. She felt a lot better after crying last night. There was no need to bring it up and make her sad all over

again. “It’s nothing. Let’s eat,” he said.

Seeing that he didn’t want to talk about it anymore, Stella said, “If something like that happens again, you don’t have to fuss over me. Really,

I’ll be fine.”

Jordan’s lips curled into a smile.

Stella grew anxious and couldn’t help but say, “You don’t believe me, do you?”

“I do,” Jordan replied.

But Stella still felt like he didn’t really believe her. She really wanted to show him she was fine, but just saying it wasn’t enough. In the end, all she could do was sigh.

Jordan suddenly spoke up, “Stella, have you ever thought about making things real between us? I mean, maybe you could try actually being with me?”

Stella was stunned. He’d mentioned this before, but she’d turned him down back then because she didn’t want to be a burden to him.

But now that her health was getting better, maybe she could actually fall in love. “Are you really sure you want to try being with me?” she asked softly.

Jordan placed his hand gently over hers. “Why are you so hard on yourself? Don’t think about what you’ve been through. Maybe those things made you feel small, but to me, you’re the best there is.

“I know you might not want to hear this, but even if your body never recovers enough to have kids, it doesn’t matter to me at all, I don’t care about that. I just want someone who truly gets me, someone I can connect with.”

Stella was deeply moved by his sincerity.
