I couldn't believe my ears when Alex said that he wanted to take me to Colorado. I tried to keep my voice steady, but I could feel the panic rising in my chest.
"Colorado?" I repeated, trying to sound casual. "Why Colorado?"
Alex looked at me with a puzzled expression. "I thought it would be a great place to go hiking and explore the mountains. You know before moving there." He took my hands in his and looked me in the eyes.
"I am serious about you and the twins. I want you three. You’re all my world. I understand that this is a lot for you to take in, but I can't imagine wanting anyone else. You mean so much to me."
I tried to keep my smile in place, but my mind was racing. I couldn't go back to Colorado, not after what happened with Lochlan. I had left everything behind and started a new life, but the thought of going back there made me feel sick.
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. "That sounds like fun, but I don't know if I can go to Colorado. I have some bad memories there."
Alex's expression softened, and he put his arm around me. "I'm sorry, I didn't know. You never mentioned it before."
I felt guilty for keeping my secret from Alex.
"I have something to tell you," I blurted out suddenly, surprising myself.
Alex looked at me, concern etched on his face. "What is it?"
I took a deep breath, steeling myself for his reaction. "I'm a werewolf, Alex. And I have a past with someone who is dangerous. That's why I couldn't go back to Colorado."
"I know." he said looking me in the eye.
I raised an eyebrow at him, curious about what he was thinking. "What do you mean?"
I felt a knot form in my stomach as I waited for him to continue. I had shared my deepest secret with him, and I wasn't sure if I was ready for whatever he was about to say. What if he was about to cancel everything with me and move on his own? What if he changed his mind about being with me and wanting me? I couldn’t face the possibility of losing him already. It was crazy how much he meant to me already.
"I knew you were a werewolf; I could sense it." Alex said, his voice serious.
I stared at him in shock, not sure how to respond. "Sense it? What? How?"
Alex shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips. "I just knew. You have this wildness in your eyes sometimes, and I could sense something different about you. "
"But that would mean you are."
I felt a sense of relief wash over me, knowing that I had someone I could trust. "Thank you, Alex. You have no idea how much this means to me."
Alex squeezed my hand, his touch grounding me. "I think I do. I'm just glad that we can be ourselves around each other, no matter what.
As we sat there, holding hands, I knew that I had found someone special. Someone who accepted me for who I was, werewolf and all. And I knew that I would do anything to protect him, just like he would do anything to protect me.
Suddenly my phone rang, and I was bought back to reality.
"Maria, is everything ok?" I was terrified that something had happened.
"Everything is fine, but the twins are asking for you." Maria said down the phone causing me to glance at my watch and notice how late it had become.
"Oh my gosh. I will be right there." I said ending the call and feeling gutted that I had to dash off.
Alex looked at me and smiled. "Time flies when you are having fun hey?"
He was right. Time certainly did fly by.
