Shannon wasn't sure if Jordan had made that statement on purpose, but negotiations had always been a process of mutual probing.
"What do you want then?" she asked.
Then, she analyzed. "You've lived as Jordan for years, and you've repeatedly revealed events happening in the alternate world through Isabel's works. You must've known someone would find you through those clues. If not me, then someone else.
"But you mentioned earlier that you lied to test my abilities, which means you were certain I'd find you.
"If I assume all of this was arranged to have me come to you voluntarily, what do you want to trade for?"
Jordan listened silently as she spoke. There was a faint inscrutable expression on his typically honest and unassuming face. Suddenly, he raised a hand and pointed to the stone hanging around Shannon's neck.
"If I must say… I want the spiritual stone you're wearing."
Shannon frowned slightly and rejected his request. "That's impossible. You'll have to choose something else." Like Tortoise the System perhaps.
Jordan was firm. "I only want that stone."
Shannon was equally resolute. She pushed the tortoise closer to him on the table and said, "I still think this suits you better."
Jordan pushed the tortoise aside with an indifferent expression and without a glance. "It seems we won't reach an agreement."
Shannon studied Jordan and knew he was set in his decision. Then, she stopped pressing and turned to leave.
But after taking two steps forward, she heard Jordan's voice behind her. "Wait."
He pointed at the tortoise on the table. "Don't forget to take this useless trash with you."
Shannon turned around and saw the tortoise had almost fully withdrawn into its shell. If tortoises could express emotions, she figured it'd be brimming with tears.
Shannon couldn't quite describe her feelings after listening to his cold detached words. She said nothing further and took the tortoise with her as she left.
To her surprise, she spotted a tall figure leaning casually against the window in the hallway as soon as she stepped out the door. Though it'd just been a few days since they'd last seen each other, it felt much longer.
"Benjamin," Shannon called out.
Shannon found it rather odd that he was here. This was the first time he'd shown up at Seastone Security Branch Agency.
"Why are you here? Is there anything you have to deal with?"
"Yes," Benjamin replied.
He looked at her and uttered in a deep voice, "I'm here to pick you up."
