We came and she was distressed to the core, “Papa,” She mumbled.
I glanced at her, not sure how to react or how to comfort her. I couldn’t either.
“You stay with him, I will talk to the doctor,” I spoke vaguely, noticing how dismay was plastered on her features.
“Let me come with you,” She whined and I gestured to her to stop.
“You stay here, with him. You should,” I whispered in a low tone, averting my gaze.
She opened her mouth to argue but closed it, knowing I was right and sat down.
They checked up on her Father. I came to her, scrutinizing her posture carefully knowing there was nothing I could do to reduce it.
“I am sorry,” She whispered.
Forming my lips in a thin line, I stared intensely at her. There was something I wanted to tell her but it was not the time.
Internally sighing, before taking a seat, I sat beside her, leaning back and placing my one hand over the headrest.
“Saafia…”
“Hmm?”
She was looking down at her laps, her big lashes had moistness in them. So perturbed.
Though she had accepted he won’t recover yet the news of his worsen state broke her.
My eyes like always, on their own without control, got lost in those exculpated features. Noticing them, drowning in them to wonder if it was a reality or my imagination.
“I talked to the doctor. He said he is fine now.”
I breathed out slowly after being done with my minute long close inspection of her beautiful face.
I wanted to place my hand behind her over her shoulder for reassurance but knew it wouldn’t do anything.
Why would my hands give her comfort?
“Doctor called me to say that his condition got bad and I just panicked. I didn’t know what to do, my mind stopped functioning.” She whispered, clutching her dress, tears brimming in them.
“What?” I frowned, shifting my upper body to her. Okay, fights aside, she should have let me know before.
“Yes, that is why I called you but since you don’t have emotions, you just neglect,” She mumbled, wiping her eyes, expecting nothing less from me.
“Why didn’t you tell me before or called again, heck even a text? I would have let you go with the driver then. You didn’t tell me the reason,”
I scolded her to which she smiled emptily, baffling me. She was not infuriated? That was surprising.
“I couldn’t think. You said you will come and honestly, I was not strong enough to see him alone too.”
Murmuring, her glimmering orbs met mine, I was literally taken back upon hearing that she needed me to be with her.
Strangely, I swallowed hard, refusing to look away.
“Yeah, I know that. You wouldn’t be able to bear it.” I murmured back. The real reason why I didn’t let the driver take her, even if she had told me.
“You said he’d be okay… Did you tell your sister the same words after your parents died? Because it feels like a fake hope.” She chuckled hollowly, stinging my chest.
“If you are showering me with two talks and some generosity, I won’t take advantage of it.” She chuckled hollowly, taking me out from my unwanted thoughts.
“Are you still stuck on that?” I frowned.
“Because I believed in them. My fault. I won’t do it again.” She sighed, shaking her head and it was not the moment to talk about our distances or differences.
“Saafia-”
I tried to call her but she rose from the seat, putting her hand in the air.
“He is okay now. Let’s go back. Staying here would only hurt me. Let’s grab something on our way back. I am hungry.” She smiled, being the kind soul she is, not showing her feelings which made me grit my teeth.
Exhaling, I pinched the bridge of my nose and got up, taking her hand, not talking about it anymore.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
She paused before entering the lift. She flinched, glancing at me with distress but sighing, I turned my head away with my hands in my pockets and stood in the corner.
Swallowing hard, she stood in the other corner, holding her arms as I glanced at her. I didn't expect it but it was her fault anyways.
What did I do?
‘Did I scare her that much?’ I thought, noticing the discomfort gleaming on her innocent face and the answer was before me.
Yes. Because that is what I am.
An insensitive bastard.
