I opened my mouth to get any idea what it could be about but we bumped into a certain unwanted couple, wiping the amusement on his face instantly.
Forming my lips in a thin line, we all exchanged awkward glances and instead of lowering it, Veronica increased the hesitation by her remark.
“Wow, never thought you guys would… marry.”
He listened to her, bringing a deadly silence for the next few seconds before releasing a mocking chuckle.
“When two people who got cheated by the person they trusted the most- they find comfort in each other.”
My body stilled when he rested his hand over my shoulder, bringing me closer to his chest. Jared narrowed his eyes with compassion, noticing my discomfort but I hid it quickly.
“Dariel, Please. You have moved on with your wife, I have moved on with my husband. Don’t bring the past in between.” Veronica smiled faintly, hoping to clear the hatred but to no avail.
That man had sworn to take revenge, forgiveness didn’t exist in his books.
“You cannot eradicate your past, Veronica and the fact you have left me for my fucking employee would never change.” He growled in a low tone and about to lose himself.
But, gaining my courage, I unknowingly put my hand over his chest. My heart skipped a beat when I touched him for the first time myself.
He stopped immediately when I pressed my palm over his chest. His eyes slowly shifted towards me, drying my throat at the keenness.
“Please, don’t do this. People will look.”
Averting my gaze, I whispered quickly, removing my hand.
He stared at me for the next few seconds before releasing a long sigh and nodded in agreement.
“Right, Darling, leave them.”
We pulled away slightly, hiding the slight awkwardness and turned to leave not before him glaring at them for the final time.
“When their hearts didn’t tremble before becoming unfaithful then why would it be hurt by mere taunts. Let’s go and enjoy ourselves.”
Hissing for the final time, we both walked away and he continued his act of gallantry again, disturbing me to find his smile.
Wondering how fake one could be and for what reason?
I bore it for a while but soon grew infuriated at his façade of felicity and gentleness which didn’t exist. I had enough of his fakeness.
The second I got my chance, I ripped my hand from his and turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” He asked coldly, displeased with my action.
“To the bathroom, away from you, far away from you.” I hissed in a whisper.
He came forward, glaring at me to stop behaving like this, “Shut up. Someone will listen.”
Scoffing, I folded my arms at my chest, “You are a heartless one who cares about nothing but his frontage. Your acting, your fake smile, your touches, ‘you’ are making me sick.”
“Not my fault that you have chosen to be the kindest of all. That you show your perfect, forgiving nature like hell anyone could be this kind.” He scoffed back before returning a fatal glare, pointing his finger over my heart with a dead aura, enraging me more.
“And you know what? ‘You’ make ‘me’ sick.” He whispered, curling his lips upwards.
My jaw dropped, curling my hands in a fist, I slapped his hand away. Losing my patience with this self-centered man.
Gritting my teeth, I glared into his eyes and growled earnestly.
“You are an asshole.”
He smirked at my enraged reaction of piercing my heart by those heartless comments. His hands raised to the air to let me go and without a second thought, I gathered my dress and rushed to the bathroom, away from him.
After leaving him, hoping to stay away from him as far as possible, I was in the corridor, leaning against the wall.
“Why did you marry him, Saafia!? Of course he must have forced you!” He whisper-yelled.
Startled at his rage, I also whisper-yelled, praying it won’t gather attention. I had no intention of facing his wrath that it was my fault.
“I consented, Jared! Enough of you. I am in this marriage because I want to, I am sincere to my bond unlike you so stop faking this worry, I don’t need it.” Hissing, I pushed him away.
Running my hand through my hair out of distress, checking around if anyone was there but thankful the corridors were empty.
“I am only worried, you don’t know. How much worse he could get. I have seen Veronica, I have seen what he did to her. He is a toxic man.” He whispered desperately, grabbing my arm and turning me to him.
My breaths hitched when he touched me. Stiff for a moment, I stared at his face, the face I trust so deeply and it ended up leaving me.
“So what? What does it have to do with you? Who are you to tell me that or care?” I whispered in a slow, weak tone.
Looking at him was hurting me. Because of him, today, he questioned my love too, that I never loved him.
“Please let me do one thing right or else I will be consumed by guilt.” He pleaded with me but with his unasked courtesy to save me, I yanked my arm back, glaring at him.
“Then be guilty forever.” I hissed, pulling away roughly from him, turning to leave but called.
“Fine. But, keep my warning in your mind.”
“What?” I scoffed.
“He will destroy you from inside, Saafia.”
To which I smirked and glanced from my shoulder with my determination glistening in it as well as I enunciated.
“I am not that weak to be broken by a man like him.”
