Chapter 164
When we arrive at the ware
up
it’s obvious that it’s lowly guarded from the outside. Just two men stand at the front entrance, another at the side door and one around the back. Mom and I changed in the car to some more practical clothing, black shirts, pants, joggers and she even strapped me with a few knives just in case. Seeing her like this is something primal. As we crouch low in the bushes to the side, she looks every bit the huntress she is. Matteo begrudgingly accepted the role of a distraction, sauntering around the side of the building as if he’s drunk.
“What the fuck?” The guard spits as Matteo acts as though he’s about to piss on the building. “You can’t do that here man, come on, get out of here.” The guard walks up to Matteo and that’s the exact moment Mom pounces on him from behind. She jumps onto his back and holds on for dear life as she strangles him with a small piece of rope. When his body goes limp and falls to the ground she lets go, dragging him back to the bushes where I zip tie his hands and feet and we leave him there, taking his place by the door and listening for any signs of movement inside. Matteo pulls out his gun and I take a knife as Mom signals for me to open the door and stand back. I count down to three and pull it open quickly as they rush inside, I’m quickly behind them as three guards who were playing a card game at a dingy table stumble to their feet. Matteo gets to the first guy, smacking the end of his gun over his temple, while Mom takes the second and third. I’m distracted for a moment watching her spin and twirl as she takes them down that I miss the moment someone comes up behind me, pulling me by my hair down onto my back, a large boot comes for my face and I grab it just in time to push it to the side, sending the fat fucker off balance. Just as Matteo runs over to kick him in the chest. He stumbles backwards as I roll to my feet and charge at him low, taking his feet out from under him, before I can make another move, Matteo clocks that guy in the temple too and I pout at him.
“Hey! That guy was mine!”
“Next time kiddo.” He ruffles my hair as we scan the area for any more surprises. The noise must have drawn the attention of the guards outside because there’s a knock on the door before a voice sounds out, “Hey, everything all good in there?” The doorknob twists on the front and Matteo and Mom rush over to it, standing on the side so they won’t be seen, and I copy to action on the back door. Mom locks eyes with me, holding her knives out and ready as she nods and I grip mine and nod back. Her door opens first but I block out what’s happening to concentrate on mine, and this time when it opens, I’m ready. I bring the weapon up and drive it straight into the neck of the person on the other side before they can even blink. Blood spurts across my face as the guy clutches his neck, stumbling and gurgling around the wound. I take a step back and watch as he falls to the ground squirming for a second before he falls victim to his injury.
“You didn’t have to kill him, Isla.” Mom crosses her arms as she walks over to me and frowns down
w zip tying. to the body. I look over her shoulder and frown at the two unconscious guys Matteo i
“Oh, I didn’t realize we were just subduing.” I shrug. “I thought your nod meant ‘take them down““.
She rolls her eyes. “He could have been a nice guy just doing his job.”
“Well I guess we’ll never know.”
I take a look around the space, there’s a staircase that leads up stairs and a few doors on this level I’m guessing if there was anyone else in the building they would have heard by now, but we don’t take the chance and sweep all the rooms together. We clear the first level, finding nothing more than some empty crates and shelving. Then we make our way up the stairs. When we reach the landing, Matteo holds his hand up to pause us in our tracks. I listen hard in the silent space for what he might have heard, and then I hear it too…A small whimper, a sniffle, a quiet “shhh“. Matteo looks back at us and Mom pushes him aside to go up before him, reaching for the first door, nothing. In the next, nothing. I move around her to go to another door further down and when I open it, my
heart breaks.
The only light in the room comes from the door I’ve just opened but it’s unmistakable what I see and I scramble for a light switch, finding it and turning it on. Twenty, maybe thirty young children shield their eyes from the sudden light and the intruder in the room, me. I quickly put my weapon away and raise my hands to show I mean no harm.
“Mom…” I say as calmly as possible as she rushes in behind me.
“Oh my gosh…”
“What is it?” Matteo come in quickly after her and the children all seem to flinch and cower at his
presence.
“Hey, it’s okay. We’re not going to hurt you. My name is Isla, I’m here to help you. Does anyone speak English?”
Once of the order girl who’s holding a much younger little boy raises her hand slowly and shakily and I slowly move over to her and kneel down.
