Cassian had been about to push the door open when he heard Ana’s unexpected confession. He froze, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
After a moment, he finally entered, carrying several bags.
“You only went to buy salt. How did you end up with all this stuff?” Ana asked with amusement, looking at his hands.
Cassian smiled helplessly. “Mrs. Wilson recognized me as Grandma’s grandson–in–law and gave me a bag of apples. Then once other people found out who I was, I kept getting gifts all the way back. I said I didn’t need them, but they were probably so struck by my devastating good looks that they couldn’t help themselves. How could I refuse such enthusiasm?”
Ana burst out laughing. “You’re shameless.”
Even her grandmother chuckled.
Seeing their moods lift from somber to cheerful, Cassian smiled too.
If Yinsen Hunter and Griffin Orlando had been there, they would’ve teased Cassian mercilessly for throwing away all his dignity just to make his wife laugh.
Right after dinner, her grandmother started shooing Ana and Cassian away.
Cassian insisted on helping clean up, and while he was in the kitchen, he noticed some fruit. He peeled an apple and carved it into an adorable bunny shape, then brought it out for Ana and her grandmother.
Her grandmother was a bit overwhelmed by the gesture. Cassian was clearly treating Ana like a precious child.
“Cassian’s a good man–so caring. And look at this cute little bunny he made!” Her grandmother felt reassured.
“He really is wonderful. Grandma, why don’t you come live with us?” Ana suggested.
After her grandmother’s leg had healed, she’d refused to keep a caregiver and had let the woman go.
Ana had been trying to find ways to convince her grandmother to move in with them ever since.
But her grandmother wouldn’t budge.
“I’m used to living here. I wouldn’t be comfortable anywhere else,” she said.
Her grandmother glanced toward her late husband’s portrait. “I want to stay here. You young people have different habits from mine. I wouldn’t fit
in.”
Knowing it was pointless to argue, Ana sighed and got up to give her grandmother a shoulder massage.
“Ouch, stop that! You’re tickling me!” Her grandmother started laughing.
