Chapter 316
Her words hit me like a blow. “Anna, you believe her just like that? I did it for you! It was because you were angry when you saw I still had that photo… Do you really think I’m the kind of man who would strip for his sister?”
I saw the conflict and doubt in Anna’s expression and felt a chill in my heart. I decided it was better to leave for now.
There’s no point explaining right now, I thought. I’ve hurt her too deeply in the past; it’s understandable she can’t trust me immediately. I need to find another way to prove my intentions.
Anna’s POV:
The following evening, I was at a business dinner with Daniel, enjoying a child–free night.
“Another toast!” I declared, accepting more wine.
Daniel leaned over. ‘Ms. Anderson, perhaps you should slow down.”
I waved him off. ‘It’s fine. I’m happy tonight–it’s not often I get a night without childcare duties.
My mind wandered to Blake’s words. I admit, Claire’s claims made me doubt my feelings. But when Blake explained everything, he seemed sincere.
Maybe I overthought things. Perhaps I shouldn’t have sent him away so quickly.
After dinner, I asked Daniel to find a driver to take me home. But strangely, the driver’s silhouette looked so much like Blake. Maybe I was just too drunk…
I woke alone the next morning, my head pounding. I texted Daniel that I wouldn’t be coming in, then called Martha to ask her to watch Nora another day.
“Mr. Wright mentioned he’d be spending time with Nora today,” Martha informed me.
“Let Nora stay with Blake another night then, I replied before surrendering to sleep again,
When I next awoke, multiple noises assaulted my senses–my phone vibrating, doorbell ringing, someone pounding on my door.
‘My head… it hurts so much…” I moaned.
I dragged myself to the door and saw Blake through the peephole.
“Blake, why are you here again? Stop messing with my emotions!” I shouted hoarsely before sliding down the door.
‘Anna, what’s wrong with your voice? Open the door!” Blake called urgently.
I don’t want any more interaction with him. He just keeps shaking my beliefs over and over again, I thought.
I knocked my head against the doorframe, trying to clear my mind. “Wake up, Anna… don’t faint…” But the motion only made me dizzier.
Blake’s voice grew more frantic. “Anna, open up! You sound terrible. Are you sick? Let me in to check on you!”
His voice seemed to fade, and I assumed he’d left, “Finally gone…” I murmured.
I tried to think clearly. “I need to find my backup phone… call Daniel or Martha…” But I couldn’t summon the strength to stand.
A tremendous crash from the balcony startled re–the sound of breaking glass. Blake had smashed through the window.
He jumped into the living room, brushing glass fragments from his clothes. Damin it, I cut myself…”
“You…” My voice was barely audible.
