Chapter 259
Anna’s POV:
The ridiculous thought almost made me laugh at myself. How could a dead man leave notes? Blake was probably just avoiding our divorce discussion Osing “death” as an excuse. How pathetic.
I left the hospital and returned to the Wright Estate. I figured he’d have to come home eventually–his sister and stepmother were still there. Where else could he hide?
The mansion was eerily quiet when I entered. Only the kitchen showed signs of life. I approached silently, spotting Caroline at the stove, stirring something
in a pot.
“Making soup for Blake?” I asked softly from the doorway.
She jumped, clutching her chest as she turned. “Anna! You scared me to death.”
“I asked if that’s soup for Blake. My tone remained cold.
Caroline gave an awkward smile. “Yes, and some for you too. You’ve been working hard taking care of Blake. Let me serve yours first–you can have it before heading back to the hospital.”
Her submissive attitude suggested she wanted to mend our relationship. But I’d seen her cruelty before. This kindness now only seemed fake.
I just got back from the hospital,” I said.
“Oh? Is that right?” Caroline paused mid–motion and looked back at me. “Then I’ll go to the hospital myself. No need for you to trouble yourself anymore.”
From her reaction, I guessed she didn’t know Blake’s whereabouts either.
Caroline brought the soup to the table, and we both sat down. When she mentioned Claire, pride filled her voice.
Her performances at Starlit Ballet are getting more popular. She recently landed an important role. Blake’s been helping arrange her performances and training.”
For some reason, I felt relief mixed with understanding. Of course Blake wouldn’t let himself die–he still had his sister to take care of. He wasn’t avoiding me; he was with Claire.
I absentmindedly scooped some soup and looked at Caroline. “These supplements look familiar.”
“Yes, remember when I specially went to New York City to get health supplements for you? You took some, and I kept some, thinking I’d make soup when you visited. But you and Blake were always so busy. I found these when making soup for Blake and thought I’d make some for you too. It’s good for your health.”
“I’ll drink it when it cools down,” I replied.
As Caroline prepared to leave for the hospital with soup, I called out, “Caroline, wait.”
She stopped, surprised. “What is it, Anna?”
‘Caroline, you know things have been rough between Blake and me because of the divorce.”
She nodded with a sad expression–her acting was impeccable. “I really hope you two can work things out. I’ll talk to him for you. Men, you know. know how to apologize and comfort their wives.
ever
“My marriage with Blake is probably over.” I gave a bleak smile. “Speaking of men, they’re all heartless. Dad didn’t leave anything for you and Claire before he died. How will you two manage?”
Caroline looked uncomfortable. “It’s fine. We have Blake. Unlike his father, Blake values family.”

I inwardly scoffed. If Blake didn’t value relationships, she wouldn’t still be living in this house.
“That’s true, but constantly asking your son for money isn’t right for someone in your position, I continued. “Going out with friends for shopping or afternoon tea without your own card–people will talk.”
Caroline’s pleasant expression slipped, momentarily revealing coldness. “Anna, what are you implying? You think we’re spending too much of Blake’s mone f We’re not spending yours!
“Caroline, that’s not what I meant. We’re family–what’s mine is yours,” I smiled. “Blake and I aren’t getting along, so divorce is inevitable. William left me seven percent of the company shares before he died. After Blake and I divorce, keeping these shares wouldn’t be appropriate. I already have three percent of my own shares. If I gave you that seven percent, it should be enough for you and Claire to live comfortably for the rest of your lives.”
“Give them to me?” Caroline couldn’t believe it.
‘Yes. BlueWave is enough for me. I don’t want any connection to Blake anymore. If you agree, I’ll have my assistant contact you.”
Wright Group shares–I truly didn’t want them, but they were perfect bait for Caroline. Faced with such temptation, she didn’t even consider my suggestion to think it over–she agreed immediately. I knew she couldn’t resist.
I’d already arranged with Daniel to transfer the shares to Caroline gradually, always “just a little bit short, so I could maintain control when needed.
As I watched Caroline leave, I realized I hadn’t told her exactly where to find Blake at the Wright Group building. But she probably knew better than I did where he was.
Back in my bedroom, I called Monica, my friend overseas. Her voice sounded tired yet excited.
After brief pleasantries, I asked directly, “Do you know anyone trustworthy in the States who can analyze medicine ingredients?”
Monica’s tone grew serious, with that clinical detachment doctors have. “If I were there, I’d test it myself. Tell me what’s happening.”
Honestly, I didn’t know what was going on either, but thinking back to Caroline’s expression felt strange.
She seemed sincere, but she talked a lot and had all these little gestures.
I had a hunch–there was definitely something wrong with those supplements.
I made up an excuse about not feeling well and asked Monica to check the health supplements someone had given me.
That night, I woke from a nightmare where Blake jumped from a tall building. Even awake, I couldn’t shake the image of blood splattering.
I lay blinking in the darkness for a long time, reaching over to feel the cold, empty space beside me. Blake had been discharged but hadn’t come home.
I decided I wouldn’t stay in his house anymore. It was time to return to my apartment in Back Bay. I got dressed and packed essentials.
Passing Claire’s door, I paused, remembering my earlier curiosity about her room and Caroline catching me. Now I could go anywhere in the mansion, but I’d lost interest in investigating.
