Chapter 258

Stepsisters Secret

Anna’s POV:

Blake looked like hell. He leaned against the headboard, eyes vacant and cold, staring at me as if I were an inanimate object. His father’s recent death hed clearly taken a toll on his health.

Blake, Caroline made this soup for you,I said.

William’s decline had nearly broken him completely. The thick stack of medical reports sat on the table beside his hospital bed, covered in dense text. I merely glanced at them before setting the thermos on top of the pile.

Aren’t youaren’t you going to look at them?he asked, his voice hoarse and weak, his breathing shaky.

Look at what?I replied.

The papers under the thermos were already getting crumpled. I gave the

health.

a dismissive glance and said indifferently, The doctors are taking care of your

I paused, then looked at him with a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. And

Caroline is looking after you too, of course.

I stood up, playing the role of the dutiful wife, unscrewing the thermos to pour him some soup. But suddenly, he snapped.

A guttural growl emerged from somewhere between his chest and throat as

ently knocked the thermos away with one hand.

The metal container hit the floor with an eerie, lingering clatter. The soup splattered everywhere.

The physical distance between us was barely three feet, but it felt like a bottomless chasm separated us. One wrong step and we’d both plunge into the abyss.

I knew that by now, all he probably felt for me was hatred.

He stared at me, but his eyes seemed to look through me rather than at me.

His body was drenched in sweat, as if he were enduring endless pain, his jaw clenched so tightly I thought his teeth might shatter.

Both our hands were trembling.

Mine from the hot soup that had splashed on me. His from being balled into fists, seemingly restraining something powerful and volatile inside him

What the fuck is wrong with you?I shouted. If you don’t want me to visit, I’ll leave!

Blake stared at me desperately before his voice became eerily calm. Are you here to see me, or to get my signature? Get out. I don’t want to see you.

His anger had dissipated, leaving only exhaustion. I recognized my own cruelty, but believed it was my only escape from him.

Anna, what are you doing?!Claire burst into the room and rushed to Blake’s side, pulling his head against her chest. She checked his temperature with her hand. Blakey still has a fever. Are youare you trying to destroy our family? Do you want my brother to follow our father to the grave? If you can’t take care of him, go home! I’ll look after him!

Her hostility was unmistakable. Blake didn’t resist her intimate gesture, letting himself be cradled by his stepsister. I almost laughed at the taking care of anyone.

Anna, Blake suddenly said, his voice steady despite his condition. What if I die? If I die, would you regret being so determined to leave me?

The air froze, heavy with sadness and manipulation.

f Claire

*Blakey! Why would you say something so terrible?Claire shook him frantically, but he didn’t respond. His gaze remained fixed on me, waiting for an answer to his question.

I looked directly into his eyes. No, I wouldn’t.

Blake collapsed against the pillows in defeat, closing his eyes.

Blakey, you still have me, Claire whispered. I will never leave you. I won’t let you die. Please get better doon.

She turned to me with venom in her eyes. Anna, you don’t need to come to the hospital anymore. You don’t know that Blakey

Claire!Blake cut her off sharply.

Let her go, he commanded, utterly spent.

Don’t bother hiding anything,I said coldly. I really don’t care. Whatever happens to him has nothing to do with me anymore.

Claire lunged toward me furiously, but I caught her arm and whi

three words in her ear that instantly silenced her.

Outside the hospital, I leaned against the wall, emotionally drained. I realized then that Blake and I could only ever be predator and prey. And I was determined to be the hunter, not the hunted.

I remembered lying in our shared bedroom at Seaside Manor years ago, snuggling against him.
