Chapter 240
Anna’s POV
The silence in the car felt heavier than any argument we’d ever had.
Blake sat against his door, and I pressed against mine.
The space between us might as well have been the Grand Canyon.
His words from the venue kept replaying in my mind: “I’ll always love you.”
I told myself they were just lyrics from the song, but something about the way he’d looked at me made my heart stutter.
Damn it. I wasn’t that starry–eyed girl anymore who fell head over heels for his perfect face and charming smile.
Blake had given me the fantasy every girl dreams of–romance, passion, devotion. But I’d grown up. Fantasy and reality were two different worlds.
Back at the hotel, we moved around each other like ghosts, barely acknowledging the other’s presence. The tension was suffocating.
“Tomorrow, I’ll take you around town. Do you want to buy some new clothes? Maybe some jewelry?” Blake said suddenly in the darkness of our room.
I turned my back to him. “No thanks. I don’t make personal plans with business partners.”
The room fell silent again.
In the quiet night, I could almost hear his heartbeat–or maybe it was just mine, betraying me as usual.
The mattress shifted as Blake moved closer. His arm snaked around my waist, his fingers tracing a burning path along my spine. He nuzzled my neck, his ho breath making my skin tingle.
“You once said I was the man you loved most,” he whispered, his voice deep and rough. “What’s wrong with a little date?”
His body pressed against mine, radiating heat. I could feel his arousal through the thin fabric separating us. He turned me over, positioning himself above me, his weight supported on his arms.
I turned my face away when he tried to kiss me.
His lips landed on my cheek instead, dry and warm. I pushed against his chest, feeling his muscles flex under my palms, but he didn’t budge.
His mouth moved downward–neck, collarbone, lower. His tongue left a damp trail on my skin.
I watched him with clear eyes while he lost himself in the moment, all too aware of his weight and heat.
‘Is this why you came looking for me?” I asked coldly. “Just for this?”
Blake froze. I might as well have stabbed him. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
He rolled off me and onto his back. “Go to sleep,” he said, exhaustion evident in his voice.
We lay like strangers sharing a bed by mistake.
The space between us could’ve fit two more people. I remembered how I used to sneak into his arms in the middle of the night, seeking his warmth. Now the memory just hurt.
I closed my eyes but sleep wouldn’t come.
All I could see was Blake on that stage, playing the piano, singing those words. I remembered his hand in mine as we left the venue, his voice, his kiss.

Chapter 240
My chest ached. In the sleepless hours, that pain multiplied until tears threatened.
What was like and what was “love“? Maybe I’d been defining them wrong all along. Maybe I couldn’t measure others by my own stakenda. been caught up in my own emotions.
My thoughts chased each other in circles until dawn broke. My head pounded.
Blake’s phone rang in the early morning light. I pretended to be asleep as he jumped out of bed.
He wore only black boxer briefs, muscles rippling across his back as he moved.
“Dad, why are you calling so early? Anna’s still sleeping,” he said, his voice hushed.
I couldn’t make out William’s exact words, but Blake’s responses told me enough.
