Divorcing My Husband Over His Stepsister's Secret novel Chapter 24

Chapter 24

Anna’s POV:

Seth yanked me back just as a black SUV sped past, tires screeching against the pavement. The vehicle had come so close I could feel the rush of air as it passed.

Seth positioned himself in front of me, his body tense as he watched the car disappear down the

street.

My heart pounded in my chest. That SUVI recognized it immediately.

It was Blake’s.

That wasI began, but couldn’t finish the sentence.

Fuck! Was that asshole trying to hit us?Seth spat, his face flushed with anger.

He turned to me, his brow furrowed as he scanned me from head to toe. Are you okay?

I’m fine,I said, trying to steady my breathing.

Seth jangled his car keys. Come on. We’re going to the hospital. That cheek needs proper

treatment.

I hesitated, but Seth had already opened the passenger door of his car. Get in. I don’t have all day to

stand around here.

His words were harsh, but I noticed how carefully he helped me into the car.

As we neared the hospital, Seth turned to me. Did you know we have a coral restoration project underway in the nearest coastal waters? Based on your expertise, do you have any suggestions?

I looked at him sideways. Is this an interview question? Am I being considered for Henry’s team

now?

No,he replied flatly, then added after a pause, but it could mean a raise.

Oh?I straightened in my seat, suddenly interested.

I thought for a moment before answering his question, explaining how I would approach a similar ecological problem from multiple angles. Seth listened attentively, nodding occasionally.

When I finished, he asked, Feeling better now?

What do you mean?I was confused by the abrupt change of subject.

Nothing. Just asking. He kept his eyes on the road.

I shifted in my seat, suddenly realizing what he’d donedistracted me from my pain and troubles with work talk. It wassurprisingly thoughtful.

Next time I invite Henry to dinner, I’ll include you too,I said.

Seth smirked. I’ll think about it. I get a lot of dinner invitations from women.

Then I’ll cancel yours,I retorted, pretending to be offended.

I’m kidding,he said, shooting me a quick glance. I’ll be there.

The hospital visit was mercifully quick. The doctor cleaned my cheek, applied some antibiotic cream, and gave me a small tube of medicated ointment to use at home.

Seth waited the entire time, scrolling through his phone but looking up whenever I winced.

Afterward, he drove me to my apartment building in Back Bay.

Take a few days off,he said as I was getting out of the car. You look awful. Don’t scare anyone.

Sure,I replied, too tired to fight back. Besides, he had just taken me to the hospital. I owed him at Heast the pretense of compliance.

As he drove away, I felt oddly lightheaded. Not from the injury, but from the strange reality where Seth actually cared about my wellbeing.

The elevator doors opened, and my momentary good mood evaporated instantly.

Blake stood by the window at the end of the hallway, his back to me. He was dressed in an impeccable suit, hands clasped behind his back.

I froze, my finger hovering over the elevator button, contemplating whether to go back down and wait in the lobby until he left. But it was too late. He’d heard the elevator ping.

Blake turned around, his sharp eyes immediately finding mine. His face was expressionless, giving away nothing.

You’re back,he said, his voice devoid of emotion.

I bit my lip. Obviously.

I tried to walk past him to my door, but he didn’t move.

Seth drove you home? His eyes lingered on the bandage on my cheek.

I looked up at him defiantly. Yes. What’s it to you? Move aside.

We stood there, eyes locked in silent battle, neither willing to back down.

Why don’t you invite your Mr. Price up for a drink?Blake’s voice dripped with sarcasm.

You know what? I will!I turned and jabbed the elevator button again, ready to escape this toxic

conversation.

Blake moved with surprising speed, pressing his hand against the elevator door to prevent it from opening.
