Chapter 6
A few days later, the art gallery manager called and told me a new batch of exquisite paintings had

I’d asked the owner to set aside a few pieces for the women in my family, and knowing my taste, he must’ve selected works that were perfect for a collection.
After gathering my things, I eagerly headed
over.
As soon as I entered the VIP room, I saw Charles and Tracy picking out paintings.
Upon seeing me, Charles quickly explained, “Vicky, what are you doing here? Tracy wanted help picking out a gift for her elders,

and she wasn’t sure, so she asked me for my opinion. Please don’t think too much about
it.”
The gallery owner, noticing me, immediately presented a breathtaking piece–an oil painting of a serene landscape. The quality was exceptional, though it couldn’t quite compare to the masterpieces I had back home, but it was fine for a thoughtful gift.

“Charles, this piece is perfect! My mother will absolutely adore it!”
Charles glanced at me with an
uncomfortable expression.

of painting, so I’m afraid I can’t let you have it.”
Tracy Davis sneered. “Your parents are just regular working–class people; what do they know about art? Besides, can you even afford this painting? Are you planning to charge it to someone else’s fiancé’s account? Or, Charles, what do you think…”
“Vicky, Tracy really needs this piece. Could you please let her have it? I promise I’ll find something even better for your mother.”
His blatant favoritism didn’t faze me anymore. I had become numb to it.
As I left the store, Charles rushed out to explain, Tracy following closely behind.
I was fed up, walking briskly ahead, trying to shake them off. Suddenly, a loud crash

rang out as a coffee cup was knocked over, spilling hot water across the pavement.
In that split second, I instinctively reached for Charles’s hand, but instead, he shoved me aside, rushing to shield Tracy from the scalding liquid, pushing her safely out of the
way.
While the hot water splashed on my leg.
“Are you okay?”
