Chapter9
“No… my wife won’t leave me…”
Shayden, his face twisted in madness, rushed toward Kenton and me.
A group of frenzied reporters followed him, snapping pictures.
“Honey, don’t leave me.”
He gripped my arm tightly, falling to his knees before me.
“I’ve always loved you. The one I’ve always loved is you…”
I couldn’t hold back and shouted at him: “Shayden! You’ve already gotten back together with my sister and you still want to

lie to me?”
“It’s because Feryal understands me! But you don’t.”
A red amulet fell from Shayden’s suit, and I froze.
It was the love charm I’d gotten from a church in the mountains during my senior
summer.
We each had one, but he’d claimed to have lost it long ago.
“I liked you back in high school, but your parents didn’t like me, this poor boy. They looked down on me, you didn’t know that.”
“But your sister knew. She could always tell how I was feeling right away.”

For the first time, I felt disgusted by my feelings for Shayden.
“So you treated me the same way they treated you?”
He didn’t realize where he’d gone wrong.
“Three years for three years, that’s fair!”
He crawled toward me on his knees, eyes full of hope: –“Three years have passed, honey. We’ll have a new life, a new beginning.”
In front of him, I slowly slid the pinky ring onto my fourth finger.
“I just agreed to Kenton’s proposal. Remember to come to our wedding, Mr. Holmes.”
Shayden completely lost it.

“If you won’t be with me, then come die with me!”
By the time I saw him pull a knife from his chest, it was too late.
I pushed Kenton away in a panic, but he quickly shielded me with his body.
“No!”
Kenton was sent to the hospital, fortunately, no vital organs were harmed.
I stared at him, unconscious in the hospital bed, and dialed a number.
“Hello, this is Phaith.”
“Name your price, I want every piece of footage you have on Shayden.”

I wanted him ruined, for him to never be able to lift his head in public again.
The video of Shayden caught in the park, naked and cheating, spread through the streets. I took the liberty of blurring Feryal’s face for her privacy.
The Holmes Group’s stock plummeted, and their CEO was jailed for intentional harm.
As the news aired, I sat in the hospital room, peeling an apple for Kenton.
I glanced down at Kenton, who was clinging to my waist, and sighed.
“Let go of me.”
“No, we’re about to become husband and wife…” He instinctively glanced at the ring

finger on my right hand.
“Where’s the ring?!”
I put the apple down, pulled the ring from my pocket, and looked Kenton in the eye.
“Think carefully, if you betray me, your outcome will be worse than his.”
“Kenton, it’s not too late to regret it now.”
