When Ines returned to the Meyer Estate, she found an unusual atmosphere. The family gathered in the living room. Their faces were a mix of emotions. Today wasn’t a weekend, but Ashley and Lauren were also present. Jacob, however, was nowhere to be found.
Ashley, usually the joker of the group, sat quietly on the sofa, not uttering a single word.
Usually, at this time, everyone would be gathered together, playing with the two little babies. But today, they were absent from the living room, evidently taken to the nursery by Camela and Moria.
Something must have happened.
“What happened? Why are you all looking so serious?” Ines asked. The frown creased her forehead.
Ashley looked at Ines and embraced her. His voice was heavy with suppressed emotion. “Ines, my dad was taken away this afternoon.”
“Your father is in trouble? What happened?”
Ashley shook his head. “We don’t know the specifics, but the main reason seems to be related to the past affairs of the Meyer Group. Someone reported him for abusing his power to help my brother and the Meyer Group evade punishment. It’s become quite a big deal.”
Ines furrowed her brows. The Meyer Group had just recently been audited by the tax authorities, and now Jacob was facing trouble. It seemed like Russel couldn’t wait any longer and had made his move. “But the past issues were settled, weren’t they? The victims agreed to a settlement, and received compensation. It is proven that someone tampered with the design plans. Joy even served some time in jail for it. Why is it being brought up again?” Ines was confused. These past issues were long resolved. Why were they mentioned again?
Ashley patted Ines’ shoulder. “Ines, you’re right. But given Dad’s position and status, even false accusations can be serious. And the public is very sensitive to these issues, so the inspectors won’t let it go.”
Thinking about the Meyer Group, Ines naturally thought of Ethan. A look of worry crossed her face. “Ethan told me he had something to handle and asked me to come back first. I hope he’s not in any trouble?”
Erica beckoned Ines over, gesturing for her to sit.
When Ines walked over, Erica took her hand. “Izzy, don’t worry. Jacob was just taken away not long ago. I don’t think anything will happen to Ethan tonight. He’s just involved in this case, so he’ll have to cooperate with the investigation in the future. You need to be prepared.”
Ines sighed in relief. Ethan had already warned her about this. “How is Jacob now?”
“What else can he be? We have not received any news yet, but probably he’ll be suspended from duty tomorrow and then undergo investigation. However, if everything is clear, he won’t be in any serious trouble. The real problem is when somebody tries to frame him.” Erica answered.
Ines nodded and looked at Lauren, who was silent. She couldn’t help but take her hand and squeeze it tightly. “Aunt Lauren, don’t worry too much. The truth will come out. Uncle Jacob and Ethan will be okay.”
“What did Sam say?” Erica asked.
Grandpa grunted. “The man promised to investigate quickly and clear Jacob’s name.”
Nobody said a word. After a while, Ivy’s cries wafted down from upstairs. Erica turned to Ines and said, “Izzy, can you go check on Ivy? She must have missed you guys after not seeing you all day.”
Ines gave a nod. “Alright, I’ll head up then. You all should head to bed soon too.”
For some reason, Ivy wouldn’t stop crying. It took Ines a good while of cradling her in her arms to calm her down. Even then, she still made noise occasionally.
Ines gently tapped her adorable nose. “You little brat, all you know is to cry. We’re having some trouble at home now. Can you be a good girl and not add to the worries, okay?”
Ines didn’t know whether the little one understood. Ivy just stared at Ines with her big eyes. Her mouth was curling into a little smile. She then raised her tiny hand to grab Ines’ hair. “Don’t be naughty. Mind your manners or mommy will have to smack your hand.”
