Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts novel Chapter 456

Ethan hadn’t returned. Ines, unable to sleep, was propped up in bed reading. But she couldn’t absorb a single word. Her mind was tied in knots. Her ears were tuned to the sounds in the yard. After what felt like an eternity, she finally heard the familiar sound of a car.

Ethan walked through the door. When his handsome face appeared, Ines could finally relax. A soft, familiar voice left her lips, “Ethan, you’re back.”

Ethan nodded. The fatigue that weighed on him seemed to lift. He walked over to her and asked, “You’ve heard about Jacob’s situation, right?”

“Yeah, but only the basics. Ashley told me it’s related to the old Meyer Group case.”

Ethan sat down next to Ines. His arm draped over her shoulder. “Besides that, the Galeana Group’s project inspection issue has been brought up, along with a few other minor things.”

Ines turned to Ethan, confused. “The Galeana Group is involved too? Weren’t they the ones who caused the problem in the first place?”

Ethan smirked. “All of this was expected. Sometimes they’re not interested in the truth, just an excuse to stir the pot.”

Ines sighed in relief. She was glad she was just a businesswoman, not involved in these power games. The constant back-and-forth must be exhausting. “So when can Jacob return to work?”

“That’s still unclear. As long as everything is clarified, it’ll be alright. Today it’s too late to start any investigations, but tomorrow someone will definitely come to question us. Just tell them the truth. There’s no need to hide anything.”

“Even the tips Jacob gave us?”

Ethan caressed Ines’ face. “Of course, we can’t hide that. They have their evidence. Even if we reveal it, it won’t harm Jacob too much. You don’t need to worry.”

“Alright, I’ll cooperate and won’t hold you guys back.”

Ethan looked tired. Ines helped him off with his jacket and hung it up. Then she prepared hot water in the bathroom for him. “Ethan, why don’t you take a shower and relax? We can discuss this later.”

Ethan nodded. This was a complex issue that couldn’t be resolved quickly. So, he headed to the bathroom.

Ines sat in silence, pondering over everything that had happened. She felt that they should be proactive, instead of just playing defense. They needed to do something to curb Russel’s arrogance, but she just didn’t know what to do.

Ines nestled against Ethan’s arm. Her head was resting on his shoulder. “That’s just who I am. Phoebe and I have done our fair share of mischief while growing up. I’ll tell you all about it when we have time. And after being provoked by that twisted psychologist, Silvia, it’s only natural to have these thoughts.”

Ethan knew Ines was just trying to lighten the mood, but he didn’t object to her plan. “Alright, I’ll have Lucas get you all the information you need tomorrow. You can handle it from there.”

“Don’t worry. I won’t overstep. I’ll keep things under control.”

“I’m not worried about that.”

Ines nodded, sensing the exhaustion in his eyes. She urged him to get some rest. “Alright, it’s late now. You should get some sleep. We’re going to be busier soon.”

The pair turned off the lights and climbed into bed. Ines nestled into a comfortable spot in his arms before closing her eyes. Ethan, however, remained awake. There was a new thought crossing his mind. “Izzy,” he began, “I don’t think I’ll be able to walk you in and out everyday starting tomorrow. Even though Russel doesn’t have a reason to target you anymore, we still need to watch out for Silvia. To avoid what happened last time, I’ve arranged for some bodyguards to protect you covertly.”

She nodded in agreement. “Alright, I trust your judgment,” she said. Her voice muffled in his chest as she settled down to sleep.
