The old man put the Ethan on speakerphone, so Ethan could distinctly hear the raspy cries of the two little ones. It was a sound that twisted his heart in discomfort, but he couldn’t allow himself to leave. Not even for a second.
“Ethan, your grandfather’s right. You know? Izzy isn’t going to wake up anytime soon. And those two little ones are her flesh and blood, born after nine long months of her carrying them... She’s been through hell for them. You can’t just abandon them now. Izzy won’t be pleased.”
Ethan furrowed his brows, pondering for a few seconds before addressing his grandfather. “Grandpa, please bring them to the hospital. I won’t leave until Izzy wakes up. If they want to be with me, they’ll have to stay in the hospital too.”
Upon hearing Ethan’s words, his grandfather lost his temper, nearly unable to stand firmly. “What nonsense are you talking about! They’re just babies. They shouldn’t live in a hospital!”
Ethan stood his ground. His voice was in a tinge of despair and weariness. “Grandpa, this is all I can do. I won’t leave the hospital.” It was a dilemma, but Izzy was always his first choice.
“Ethan, why are you being so stubborn?”
“I’ve made my decision after careful consideration, grandpa,” Ethan declared solemnly. Seeing her son’s unwavering resolve, Erica took the phone from Ethan, soothing his grandfather on the other end. “Please, just do as Ethan says. Bring Ivy and Ollie to the hospital. We have a VIP room with two small bedrooms. Camela and I can take care of them. You can even have someone guard the door 24/7. They’ll be perfectly safe.”
His grandfather disagreed, but after one look at the crying babies, he sighed in defeat. “Alright, I’ll have Camela pack their things and bring them over.”
Ethan hadn’t seen his children for several days. Their faces were now noticeably thinner, which tugged at his heartstrings, filling him with remorse. He swiftly took Ivy from Camela, gently patting her back. “I’m sorry, Ivy. Daddy hasn’t been there for you these past few days. Your mom is here, so I can’t leave her. Every time I’m not by her side, she gets hurt.”
The little girl quieted down in his arms after a while, as did Ollie. Ethan personally made them a bottle of formula each, which the twins gulped down without complaint.
And so, Ethan moved into the hospital with the twins. Strangely, the twins were much quieter in the hospital room than they were at the Meyer Mansion, only letting out a few whimpers when they were hungry.
They went from being little devils to well-behaved angels, which was much to the adults’ relief.
Camela couldn’t help her tears, telling Erica, “Children really can’t be separated from their parents for too long. No matter how well we look after them, we can never replace their mom and dad.”
“Indeed, blood ties are truly innate.”
Every day, whenever Ethan had free time, he would hold the twins and talk to Izzy. Ashley and Phoebe would also come over at noon whenever they could, keeping Izzy company for a while before leaving.
At first, Phoebe held some resentment against Ethan. But seeing how he took care of Izzy, and how he did everything himself without any complaints, she no longer had the intention to chew him out.
When Erica brought over food, Ethan was gently guiding Ollie’s hand to touch Izzy’s face. “Sweetie, tell mommy you miss her. Tell her to wake up soon.”
Phillip had no choice but to call and explain the situation. The entire family rushed over. Joy, who was visibly pregnant, was also coming along out of concern.
Rita had a lot to say to Ethan, but after seeing the state of their family, she didn’t know what to say. All she could do was wiping away her tears.
Ethan approached her, looking at her earnestly. “Aunt Rita, I’m sorry. I didn’t protect Izzy well enough, so she ended up like this.”
Rita shook her head, “Ethan, this isn’t your fault. You can’t blame yourself for any of this. But you’ve been bearing quite a load lately, haven’t you? It’s really not easy to look after Izzy and the kids at the same time. Besides, you also have to manage two companies... I haven’t seen you for some time and you seem to have aged a bit.”
“All this is my responsibility,” Ethan responded. “Auntie, you should stay in A City for a while. No need to rush back. Considering Izzy’s condition right now, I think it’s not good for her to be on the move. Our two apartments downtown are empty at the moment. You can pick one and stay there for a while, and it will also be easier for you to visit Izzy and the kids.”
Zander gave Ethan a friendly pat on the shoulder. “Ethan, don’t worry about us. We can handle things on our own.”
Ethan nodded and turned to Jeffery. “I’m really busy right now, so I really need your help with Auntie and her family.”
“Don’t worry, Ethan,” Jeffery assured him. “You focus on Izzy’s care. I will take care of my parents. You don’t need to worry about them.”
