Jacob had been diligently investigating a car accident, managing to find some clues. However, with both car owners dead, there was no one to confirm his findings.
Jacob knocked on the door of Russel’s office and entered upon receiving permission. Russel was working on something, and his secretary was sorting out files nearby.
Upon seeing Jacob, Russel gave a smile. “Jacob, it’s rare for you to visit my office.”
Jacob took a seat opposite Russel. “I won’t be here if it’s not important.”
Russel, noticing his secretary, spoke vaguely, “I knew you’d come sooner or later. You’re just a few days late.”
The secretary put down the files she was holding and poured Jacob a cup of tea, “Please enjoy your tea, sir.”
“Thank you.”
After serving the tea, the secretary exited the room, closing the door behind her.
“Now that we’re alone, I might as well tell you that I have quite a substantial amount of evidence.” Jacob decided to cut to the chase.
“We’ve been partners for years, Jacob. People call you a fox behind your back. Of course, I know that, and I won’t do anything without thinking it through first.”
Jacob kept his expression indifferent, “Sounds reasonable. But you’ve been reckless this time. You’ve been acting out of sorts, and making uncalculated moves. Listen to this and you’ll understand what happened that night.”
Jacob handed Russel a flash drive. After a moment’s hesitation, Russel accepted it and plugged it into his computer. The only file on it was an audio recording.
He glanced at Jacob and clicked play. Soon, the voice of Silvia could be heard. It was slightly distorted and intermittent, but it was evident what she was saying.
Russel’s expression changed subtly. His emotions were rising to the surface, but he forced them back down, maintaining a calm exterior.
“Do you understand now?”
Russel simply smiled, saying nothing.
Jacob raised an eyebrow and maintained eye contact with Russel. After a few seconds, Jacob broke the silence. “This incident has revealed something to me. Silvia holds a special place in your heart. You were willing to take a substantial risk for her. Let me guess, is Silvia your secret love child?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Russel chuckled.
Jacob didn’t say anything more and left Russel’s office. He hadn’t expected to get any straightforward answers from Russel anyway. His primary concern was to prevent Russel and his associates from focusing their attention on Ines, who posed no threat to them. However, he was certain of one thing – the deceptively innocent yet ruthless Silvia was undoubtedly Russel’s daughter.
Back in his office, Russel replayed the recording. His expression was growing darker and his hand was slowly clenching into a fist.
“There’s some, but it’s not conclusive. One of the drivers just got out of jail and has no family or friends. The other driver’s mother is seriously ill and needs money for treatment. They both received a large sum of money in their bank accounts a few days before the accident. The account holder is a non-existent person, so the trail ends there.”
“It seems it will take some time to expose them.”
Jacob nodded, “They’ve been in the political game for so many years. They won’t be taken down so easily. But don’t worry. I’ve already made it clear to him this morning. They should lie low for a while. Your guess is probably correct – Silvia is likely his illegitimate daughter.”
“And Leila? Is she Russel’s daughter too?” Ethan’s heart sank.
“Whether she is or not, Ethan, there’s definitely more to the Meyer Group’s downfall. There are likely truths we’re unaware of. You should continue your investigation.” Jacob patted Ethan’s shoulder. Some truths might be brutal, but Ethan needed to be reminded: there were certainly secrets about Leila that remained hidden.
Ethan was well aware of this, but with so much time having passed and numerous changes in the Meyer Group’s personnel, uncovering the truth was not as simple as it seemed.
“I was too naive back then,” Ethan admitted, rubbing his forehead. The headache was unbearable, and the cruel reality was hard to face.
“I can understand your feelings. When this incident coincided with the Beasley issue, it caught us completely off-guard. We overlooked it and have been tricked by a woman named Silvia for all these years.”
Erica had just put the twins to bed and overheard the conversation as she stepped out of the room. She couldn’t help but ask, “What else has Silvia deceived us about?” Jacob didn’t hide anything, telling Erica about everything. Erica listened, and then fell into a cold, silent laugh. After a while, she finally spoke, “Once Izzy recovers, it’ll be time for us, the Meyers, to fight back. They’re really the first ones who dare to mess with our family like this.”
