Chapter 165
Erin’s POV
I sat on Derek’s lap, feeling the solid warmth of his body. His heat penetrated through the thin fabric of my dress, making the skin where we touched tingle slightly.
I found myself shaking my head slightly. Why was he doing this? Why tell me I was just an object of his wolf’s desire, yet show concern for my health? Did he truly care, or was this just another form of control? I couldn’t understand him, and the confusion brought almost as much pain as his rejection.
Derek’s eyes narrowed, the golden flecks in his gray irises suddenly brightening. “You’re shaking your head? Is that your signal that you don’t want to leave?”
My pulse quickened. “N–no, Alpha. I was jus

“Yes, Alpha,” I whispered, barely able to make my voice come out.
Getting up from his thigh proved much harder than it should have been. My body seemed unwilling to separate from his. When I finally stood, I felt a strange emptiness, as if something important had been taken away.
Derek watched me the entire time, his eyes never leaving my face. Under that gaze, I felt naked, as if he could see every thought I was trying to hide, every emotion. The silence between us felt heavy, filled with words we couldn’t or wouldn’t
say.
I grabbed my bag and walked toward the door, focusing on each step to remain steady. At the doorway, I paused. I knew I should just leave, walk away without looking back, but I couldn’t help myself. I turned around.
Derek’s eyes flashed gold, and his voice became a low growl that I felt more than heard. “I swear, if you keep looking at me with those eyes, I’ll have you moaning on this leather sofa before you understand what’s happening.”
Heat rushed to my cheeks and pooled in my lower abdomen. I quickly averted my gaze, afraid he would see the effect his words had on me. “I’m sorry, Alpha. I’m leaving now.”
The lobby of Stone Group was crowded as I walked toward the exit. I felt eyes following me, heard the whispers that started as I passed.
“That’s her–the Alpha’s new girl.”
“I heard she refused him, and then he fired her…”
“No, look at her. She’s still here. Must have begged for his forgiveness.”
I felt my face
With my enhanced hearing, I caught every word. Each comment stabbed into my skin like thorns, heating with embarrassment. I kept walking, trying to appear confident even though I just wanted to disappear. Why was I still drawing so much attention? I’d been the Alpha’s secretary for months now.
Outside, I took a deep breath, grateful to escape the stares and whispers. I was about to head toward the bus stop when Derek’s car pulled up in front of me.
