The others in the room remained frozen since the weight of what Rhys was feeling filled the room. Kellen couldn’t even find it in himself to tell him to tone it down. Kellen knew he was fine, but he couldn’t exactly dictate how Rhys should feel.
So he just held him as the man slowly stopped shaking. Kellen also didn’t like seeing him like this, but Kellen could feel how Taylor was hovering nearby, anxious to get to him.
"Rhys, you need to let Taylor have a look at me. I feel it’s just a bruise, but she needs to make sure. I also strained my other wound." Rhys backed off immediately at Kellen’s softly spoken words. It was so quick Kellen’s body almost lurched after him, and Rhys and Taylor had to put their hands on him to prevent him from falling.
"Fuck. Sorry." Rhys muttered, his yellow gaze still bright, but slightly dimmed. Kellen reached up, running his fingers through his hair, watching as Rhys closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"It’s okay. I’m fine now. You just surprised me." Kellen told him softly, feeling as if he was gentling an animal. Kellen would never tell him that either. It would go against his argument that Rhys wasn’t a monster, and he knew it. But all Espers were kinda...animal-like? At least that was how most Guides viewed them.
Taylor approached from the side, her eyes glowing green as she scanned Kellen carefully, repeatedly, making sure nothing was wrong.
"I told you this was dangerous." Taylor muttered, and Kellen honestly couldn’t remember her telling him that. She glowered at him when he gave her a confused look. "In my head. I definitely told you not to do it. I knew you weren’t going to listen, so I was saving the lecture for after. I hate that I was right. Damn it Kellen. We’re still short Guides, and you’re going to do this shit? Your leg is so swollen, and the bruise is..." She shook her head, sniffing as her eyes watered. "Without that protection, it might have...done some real damage." Kellen grinned.
"You saw how it didn’t even go through the Field Guide Uniform, right? I would have been alive, that’s for sure." Kellen gave her a thumbs up and Taylor’s face twisted.
"Shut up. Just because it didn’t tear through the fabric of your uniform doesn’t mean it couldn’t have done some serious damage. Your ribs, or heaven forbid, your lungs could have been damaged. You’re very lucky that the Captain was so insistent on those bullet proof vests. It wasn’t, at least, I don’t think, it was a normal D.E.C. weapon." There was one way to check that.
"Hill." Kellen called, and Hill jerked. She glanced at Kellen, before looking at Rhys.
"Yes Kellen?"
"In my long jacket, on the right hand side in one of the pockets closer to the hip should be the gun. I grabbed it." Kellen told her and Lieutenant Fisher shifted.
"You grabbed it?" He asked carefully and Kellen nodded.
"Yeah. I was worried that they would get a second wind. I shouldn’t have worried, since Sakura took over, but I’m cautious. I was doing my best not to get shot again." Hill’s face tensed, and so did Esper Blake. Lieutenant Fisher groaned.
"Well, once someone grabs it, please bring it over. I’ll check and see if it’s one of ours, or if it was brought in. From the way the bullet reacted, I have a feeling it’s from our most recent shipment, but I want to make sure." His tone was dark, unhappy, and Kellen wanted to ask what he was so worried about, but had his own concerns.
Taylor shoving a shake into his face was one of them.
"Drink. You’re going to need to guide me while I repair your sorry ass." She muttered, her eyes already focused on her task. Kellen could feel Rhys tense beside him. Kellen continued to run his fingers through Rhys’ hair soothingly and felt the man relax again.
Kellen crushed the shake, before he placed his other hand on Taylor’s shoulder as he felt her work on him. Kellen winced as she sucked his power from her, and it wasn’t the first time that Kellen was confronted with the sheer force that was Taylor inside.
Whatever Guide took her on was going to be in for a ride. She was a time sink, her pool massive for an A Class. If her power had just been a tad stronger, she probably would have been classified as a S Class on principle. But because she was just a little bit weaker then they had wanted, and she could be around Rhys and the others easily, she was an A Class Healer.
That being said, she had let her pool get quite a bit low, and Kellen had to make sure she didn’t suck him dry otherwise Rhys would kill not only him, but her as well.
"Taylor, how the fuck aren’t you-"
"Worry about yourself." Taylor’s tone was harsh as she worked, and Kellen shut his mouth. It was clear that compared to the others, she was doing a lot better at managing her levels. She looked exhausted, yes, but she didn’t look like Hill, or Pamela, or even the much better looking Casper. She had maintained her humanity through it all, and honestly, Kellen felt he should probably be proud of her for it.
"Kellen, where is your mind drifting? Are you in pain?" Rhys asked, his voice small, tender, careful. Kellen flushed.
"Oh, I’m...okay. My thigh hurts a little, but I can’t really feel the bruise yet. I’m sure it’ll sting tomorrow, but I’m okay. I just kinda...want to hear about how the situation is going outside. I have a feeling that Pamela is going to need a rest after this." Kellen muttered and Rhys frowned.
"How on earth can you be concerned about others when you were shot today, Kellen?" Rhys asked, almost chastising him and Kellen shrugged. The muscles of his chest protested, and so did Taylor. She let out a soft, warning growl and Kellen laughed nervously.
"I don’t know? It’s easy?" Kellen offered and it appeared that no one in the room liked that response. Kellen also realised he was the only Guide in the room, so he didn’t feel like this was a fair argument. He didn’t have any none-injured Guides to back up his stance.
A knock sounded at the door, and everyone froze.
"Lieutenant Fisher? Are you in here?" Kellen felt his whole body tense. He would take back his thoughts right away.
