"Wait, what?" Katie asked, uncertain if she'd heard Bernard right. "Are you serious?"
"Who's joking here? I'm a professional," Bernard said, his expression serious. "Your issue is caused by excess toxins in your body. You need to detox. Trust me—drink plenty of hot water and sweat it out; you'll feel better before you know it!"
Katie regarded him with skepticism. He seemed sincere, but it all sounded so ridiculous.
Upholding his principle of exceptional service, Bernard bowed slightly. "Thank you for having me. The consultation fee is one thousand dollars. Would you like to pay in cash or by card?"
"What?" Katie exclaimed, her jaw dropping in disbelief. "Do you think you're some kind of miracle worker? A thousand bucks for a single visit? Why not just rob a bank instead?"
"Surely you're joking, Ms. Katie," Bernard replied, a sly smile creeping onto his face. "In this business, our prices are fully transparent. My rates are fixed for a reason. And remember, my customers come first; I would never mislead you!"
After all, robbing someone was nowhere near as lucrative as scamming.
"You—"
"Enough." Before Katie could argue, Chandler cut in. "I invited him; I'll take care of the medical fees."
"Thank you for your generosity, Mr. Newton," Bernard replied, bowing slightly. "It's getting late, so I won't impose any longer. I'll be on my way."
"No, you can't just walk away! Come back here!" Katie shouted, ready to pursue him.
After all, his consultation fee was a thousand dollars. Katie could only imagine how many books Abraham would need to write to earn that much.
"Let him go," Chandler said, blocking her way. "It's just a small amount. Would you like me to escort you back to your room?"
However, her little stunt didn't fool Chandler for a second. He deftly sidestepped, and Katie landed right on the bed.
Before she could react, Chandler grabbed the blanket and wrapped her up tightly.
Katie found herself completely immobilized, a mix of embarrassment and frustration rising within her. "Chandler, what on earth are you doing?"
"I'm not doing anything," Chandler replied calmly. "Dr. Meloche said you need to sweat more, so I'm just following his instructions."
"But you don't have to wrap me up like this!" Katie protested, squirming a bit. "It's really uncomfortable!"
"Enduring a bit of discomfort is key to success," Chandler said seriously. "If you can't manage this level of self-control, I might need to reconsider our relationship."
