"Mason has already apologized. He said Sadie manipulated him into behaving that way," Madelyn said, her back turned to Helen as she became lost in thought.
"Madelyn, you're too trusting. If he's done it once, he'll do it again. You can't keep giving chances to a man like that," Helen replied, her voice tinged with frustration as she assessed the situation. "From where I stand, Mason has an agenda. Has he asked anything else of you lately?"
"No!" Madelyn retorted, her impatience rising. "We're just students. What else could we do besides eat out and go shopping? I'm just an ordinary person—what could he possibly want from me?"
"Stay alert. His relationship with Sadie isn't as straightforward as you think. I'll show you the full video later, and then you'll understand," Helen said with a sigh.
"There's no need for that," Madelyn insisted. "We agreed to leave the past behind and not bring it up again."
Helen couldn't wrap her head around it. "So, you don't care if he's emotionally cheating on you?"
"I trust him," Madelyn said firmly, her resolve unshaken.
With the conversation reaching an impasse, Helen spread her hands and offered one last piece of advice. "Your life is yours to decide, but remember that love is precious. Until you're certain Mason loves you wholeheartedly, it's best not to give him everything."
"In the end, you just want me to break up with Mason," Madelyn said, biting her lip as a sense of shame washed over her.
In a stubborn tone, she continued, "But Helen, have you thought about it? Not everyone has your fortune with admirers. I've finally found a relationship that makes me happy—why can't you just accept that?"
"Why would you think that?" Helen replied, her brow furrowing in frustration. "I just don't want you to get hurt."
"She must've had her heart broken. It seems we're both in the same boat," Bentley thought, feeling a surge of sympathy.
Reaching into his crossbody bag, he pulled out his only pack of tissues and walked over to her. "Hey, don't cry. If your eyes get puffy, you won't look your best."
When she heard his voice, the woman looked up, and their eyes locked. For a moment, they both stood in shock.
"Madelyn?" Bentley raised an eyebrow. "Didn't you just post about your relationship this morning? That's quite a quick turnaround!"
Madelyn sniffled and shot back, "Oh please, you're the one who's heartbroken! Your whole family is!"
