"Yes." Douglas nodded. "By the way, I ran into Esther's daughter when I came up just now. They're staying here too. Esther sure is carefree, letting her kid wander around at night.

"But again, she let her child fly alone, so her sense of responsibility isn't much better. There's no way we can work with someone like that!"

He added, "Should we get a couple of people to keep watch?"

Bernard's eyes flickered in disgust. "No need. Do your job. Do you think she's going to get an upper hand on me?"

Douglas realized it would draw unnecessary attention and risk exposing Bernard's whereabouts if he stationed guards.

"Understood," he replied and left.

Shortly after Douglas left, there was a knock on the door. Bernard got up to open it and saw a girl in pink pajamas standing there.

"You really do stay here!" Dora's eyes lit up when she saw him.

Before Douglas could stop her, she dashed into the living room.

Bernard frowned but held back from throwing her out.

"What do you want?" he asked.

Dora sat on the couch. "What's your name? Why haven't you called me mommy?"

Before she brought up her mother, Bernard had found the little girl rather cute and innocent. But the mention of that topic made his feelings of disgust flare up again. "Did your mother send you here?"

"Nope, I came to find you myself!" Dora shook her head and sighed. "My mommy has such bad luck. She married a deadbeat. He was poor, ugly, and irresponsible, and on top of that, he died early…"
