Gabriela, who had been planning to bring up something in private, nodded in agreement.
As the two approached the elevator and came to a stop, the doors slid open, and inside stood Brian,
Gabriela’s eyes widened. “What are you doing here?”
Jessica’s expression darkened instantly. “Who let you up?”
She had made it very clear to the front desk that Brian was not to be allowed upstairs. Clearly, someone had ignored her instructions.
“Don’t be mad, Jessi. I called Dereck,” Brian said, stepping out of the elevator with a bag of wontons.
He gave her a once–over, as if to check her mood, and only seemed to relax a little when he saw she wasn’t completely furious.
“You bothered my dad again?” Jessica’s brows furrowed, her voice full of irritation.
Brian didn’t even try to make excuses. “Yeah, that was on me. I’m sorry. But I brought you a bacon and egg sandwich. Thought you might want to try it.”
He apologized with ease, but from the look in his eyes, it was clear he didn’t think he’d done anything truly wrong.
Jessica found his nonchalance infuriating.
“Brian, since when did you become so clingy?” Gabriela snapped.”
She crossed her arms and stepped forward, not about to miss the chance to back up her best friend.
Brian barely glanced at her, giving the smallest nod in acknowledgment before turning his full attention back to Jessica, making it obvious Gabriela’s opinion meant very little to him.
Gabriela’s fists clenched slightly.
She thought, ‘Unbelievable. He messes up and still has the nerve to act smug?‘
“Jessi, you barely had breakfast,” Brian said gently. The sandwich is actually pretty good. Just have a bite, at least.”
Jessica noticed the curious glances from nearby employees and quickly decided she had no desire to drag this out in front of an audience. She snatched the bag from him and gestured toward the elevator. “Okay, message received. You can leave now.”
She couldn’t stand the sight of him any longer.
But Brian didn’t move. Instead, he reached into the bag and pulled out a folded piece of drawing paper.
“Jessi, Jake’s been trying to teach himself to draw. This is his first piece. He asked me to give it to you.”
