Chapter 268
Jessica refused to relent. “I don’t miss him. Mom, stop talking about this. I know what I’m doing, and I won’t regret it.”
“Oh, you will regret it. Don’t think I don’t know you better than that,” Stella huffed.
Jessica’s expression darkened. “Mom, if you really understood me, why do you always take their side? I’m your daughter.”

Jessica couldn’t understand what kind of spell Brian and Jacob had cast on her parents. ‘Haven’t they once fully supported my decision to distance myself from Brian and Jake?‘ she thought.
“You’re misunderstanding, Jessi. How could I take their side? I’m just worried about you,” Stella hurried to explain, startled by Jessica’s intensity.
As a mother, she knew no parent would stop loving their child. She thought, ‘Jessi is simply stuck in a cycle of pain, unable to see beyond her wounds. But cutting off all contact with Jake? Jessi will deeply regret it once the haze of anger lifts.‘
She couldn’t bear the thought of Jessica one day regretting this decision.
She gently pulled Jessica down to sit beside her. “Just hear me out, Jessi. Go see Jake, even if it’s just for a little while. Do you really want him to grow apart from you? Won’t that hurt more than anything?”
Jessica’s hand twitched at the memory of last night’s nightmare, and she almost relented.
But she quickly regained her resolve. “What’s the use of f pretending? Mom, stop trying to talk me into this. I’m not going.”
“Why? You clearly… What’s so wrong with one
sit?” Stella nearly mentioned the time Jessica had secretly gone to the hospital but stopped herself.
She figured that bringing that up would only make Jessica more resistant.
“Mom, Brian and I are divorced. Jake was granted to him. I can’t keep relying on them. For the sake of long–term stability, I need to distance myself from them completely,” Jessica said earnestly, trying to make Stella understand.
With work overwhelming her, she couldn’t physically escape by traveling, so she had to sever ties completely.
‘Or how much longer will this lingering attachment go on?‘ she thought.
Deep down, she feared being won over by them again and stepping back into the same unhappy marriage.
She’d endured that pain once, so she refused to do it a second time.
Stella’s head spun at such flawed reasoning, but Jessica was dead–set on it being the truth. No amount of pleading from Stella could make her relent.
In the end, Stella could only prepare Jessica’s favorite food, hoping to build up her strength.
The problem was, she stuck strictly to Jessica’s old preferences. Now, faced with the food she’d once loved, Jessica couldn’t even bring herself to pick up a fork.
But to spare Stella’s worry, she forced down a few bites. The second Stella left, she dashed to the bathroom and emptied her stomach, then instinctively fished out the desserts Brian had dropped off the day before and wolfed them down.
When Jessica stared at the empty snack bags, her mood plummeted.
