Chapter 244
By the time Jessica’s parents hurried to the hospital, Jacob had been transferred to a general ward, and the examination results were out.
“The child has congenital gastrointestinal issues. He must have been carefully cared for before to stay symptom–free. But recently, his good eating habits were disrupted, and yesterday you allowed him to overeat, causing the disease to flare up severely,” the doctor said.
The doctor looked at Brian with blame in his eyes. “You’re the father, right? I know parents tend to dote on kids, but you can’t indulge them in everything
especially when a child has an underlying condition like this.”
“I’m sorry, it’s my fault,” Brian didn’t argue, just bowed his head to admit his mistake.
The doctor shook his head. “Apologizing to me won’t lessen your child’s pain. Anyway, for your son’s sake, you must never neglect his diet again.”
“I got it. I’ll pay close attention and never let Jacob overeat again,” Brian replied.
Stella then noticed Jacob on the bed had woken up at some point and was staring blankly at her. She quickly sat beside him and said, “Jacob, does your stomach still hurt? Let me rub it for you.”
Jacob didn’t respond, only murmured in a daze, “Mom…”
The doctor’s words reminded him of how meticulously Jessica had cared for him before she left.
In the past, Jessica had personally prepared almost all his meals and snacks, often including foods to regulate his stomach.
Back then, he hadn’t cherished it at all and even complained the food was bland,
To solve this, Jessica had studied cooking intensively and made many dishes to his taste, but he grew tired of them and became picky at meals.
Yet Jessica had always patiently coaxed Jacob, never losing her temper. Even when he knocked over food in a tantrum, she would just offer snacks to
tide him over and cook a new meal herself.
Besides cooking for him, Jessica had also massaged his stomach every night without fail, no matter how tired she was.
The more Jacob thought, the more upset he felt. Finally, he covered his face and began to wail.
“What’s wrong? Does it still hurt somewhere? Doctor!” Stella panicked at the sight. Brian and Dereck turned to call for the doctor.
“No, I’m not hurt… I miss Mom,” Jacob sobbed.
The three of them froze at these words.
Eventually, Dereck sighed, walked to the bed, and patted his grandson’s shoulder. “Jacob, we’ll tell your mom about your illness tomorrow. Let her rest tonight, okay?”
He felt sorry for his grandson but also for his daughter. Now that Jacob was stable, there was no need to disturb Jessica’s already restless sleep.
Stella cuddled Jacob and said, “Jacob, don’t cry. When your mom finds out tomorrow, she’ll definitely come to see you.”
Jacob shook his head through tears. “No, she won’t. I didn’t listen to her. She must not want to see me…”
He deeply regretted not obeying Jessica before.
Jessica had loved him so much and sacrificed so much to care for him, yet he had often made her unhappy.
If he had been obedient, Jessica would surely be by his side now that he was sick–or maybe she wouldn’t have left at all, and he wouldn’t have fallen ill.
The more Jacob thought, the sadder he got, crying nonstop despite Stella’s attempts to comfort him.

Chapter 244
Stella could only sigh and hold him, gently patting his back.
Eventually, Jacob cried himself to sleep.
Looking at his swollen, tear–reddened eyes, Stella felt heartbroken. She called Brian out and asked about the details of Jacob’s gastrointestinal
condition.
“When he was born, Jacob was diagnosed with a stomach issue, but Jessi took such good care f him that it never flared up, so I forgot about it,” said
Brian.
Brian continued, “After Jessi left, I was busy with work and mostly asked Madeline to look after Jacob.”
He gave a bitter smile. Recalling how Madeline had indulged Jacob’s eating habits, he suddenly realized she might have deliberately harmed Jacob’s
stomach.
Madeline had worked for Jessica for three years and witnessed how strictly Jessica regulated Jacob’s diet. Yet he had failed to notice her negligence
before.
Stella frowned, eyeing Brian with more dissatisfaction. “This is all because of your irresponsibility. I remember Jessi hired a maid to care for Jacob before she left. If you’d paid more attention, his stomach wouldn’t be in this state!”
Brian bowed his head. “You’re right. It’s all my fault. I betrayed Jessi and Jacob’s trust.”
