“Mom,” Jacob called out cautiously.

“Are you worried about me, or the babies?” Jessica sneered.

Brian replied without hesitation, “I’m worried about you. Jessi, do you really see me as a jerk?”

There was undisguised sadness in Brian’s eyes as if he might cry if she nodded.

Jessica immediately dismissed the thought. Brian would never cry because of her.

“Believe what you want. Anyway, you’re not welcome here. Please teave, and don’t disturb my parents again,” Jessica said.

She had already caused enough trouble for her parents and really didn’t want Brian to bother them because of her.

Jacob’s eyes instantly dimmed, but he quickly composed himself and smiled again, asking hopefully, “Okay, I’ll listen to you. Can you come to my graduation ceremony on Friday?”

“Graduation ceremony?” Jessica was surprised. She thought, ‘Has this semester ended already?‘

“Yes! Mom, will you go with me on Friday?” Jacob pleaded in a cute/voice.

Brian added, “Jessi, it’s Jacob’s first graduation ceremony. All the other kids have their parents with them. I don’t want Jacob to have regrets. Can you spare some time to come?”

Jessica blurted out, “The moment we divorced, his lifelong regrets were already destined. What’s the point of saying this now?”

Brian’s face froze, and the smile disappeared from Jacob’s face. He looked at his mother uneasily.

She added, “if you really want parents to attend with you, I suggest you find a stepmother.”
